The Battle of Saratoga was a major turning point in the Revolutionary War. The French were waiting to see if the Americans could defeat the British. This victory gave them the confidence to back the Americans and helped the French confidently sign treaties of alliance and trade with the Americans and join the war against Britain. Before the Battle of Saratoga, “General John Burgoyne was attempting to invade New England from Canada with the goal of isolating New England from the rest of the United States.” (https://www.battlefields.org/learn/revolutionary-war/battles/saratoga) This meant that it would split the colonies in half if he could control the Hudson River Valley. He had been moving south from Canada with 7500 men and by August he had captured Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Edward. The battle took place on September 19th, 1777 in Saratoga, New York. The battle was between British forces and American forces. American troops ended up taking the win in this battle. This battle ended up being a huge win for the Americans. The French had seen the Americans when the Americans won, and showed the French that the Americans can fight in a battle and win. When the battle started, colonist marksmen shot every officer in Burgoyne’s company and then drove his army back. He divided his army into three columns and wanted to probe American defences with each one. But splitting his troops ended up being a big mistake because the British forces got trapped in the New York woods with no food or water. Things ended up not going as planned and that's when the Americans that were led by General Harito Gates and Benedict Arnold got ready to fight in the battle. Benedict Arnold was the hero of the battle as a result of his bravery, even though he would later betray and defect to the British
