One of which was conducted by Qing Zhou an assistant professor of psychology at UC Berkeley, studying the effects of authoritarian, permissive and authoritative parenting. According to Zhou, “children raised by authoritarian parents are showing maladaptive outcomes, such as depression, anxiety and poor social skills” (News.Berkeley). Authoritarian parenting can consist of verbal hostility, corporal punishment as well as be rigid and punitive; research has shown that authoritarian parenting can not only force tough academic pressure but also lead to poor mental health outcomes in children and teenagers. According to Stephen Chen, a graduate student who participated in the lab, “One aspect of tiger-parenting is setting enormously high and unreasonable expectations for your kids.”; in agreement with Chen, “there are negative cognitive effects to having overly demanding goals” as found by Sheri Johnson, a UC Berkeley psychologist. As stated by Kim Wong Keltner, writer of Tiger Babies Strike Back and an UC Berkeley alum, ““You can study harder and get straight A’s, . . . But from my point of view, the love and affection in a parent-child relationship far outweighs the importance of grades.”” Evidently, tiger parenting does take quite a toll on children's mental health along with the relationship they have with their
