Alaska has had a traumatic childhood watching her mother die and drinks away her everyday pain. To Miles it soon becomes clear she never makes the most logical choices while shes under the influence. One night after school they all meet up for the usual drinks and smokes, but Alaska really goes all out. She takes a call in the middle of the night before coming back into the room balling her eyes out screaming ‘i have to get out of here, i forgot! God, how many times can i fuck up? I JUST HAVE TO GO HELP ME GET OUT OF HERE! ‘ So Miles and Colonel get to distracting the school staff while Alaska sneaks out, both of which were fatal mistakes. She was so happy and out of it that when the slightest bit of bad news came through she came crashing down in an emotional heap with the only thought of leaving to make it right even in the state she was in and it’s a known fact that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can affect your reflexes and other factors needed to to make driving safe. Alaska didn’t even consider the possibilities that could have happened to her when she made her decision to leave that night in her drunken state. This text also relates to Basketball Diaries as Alaska running out is similar to how Jim left home. In both cases they were under the influence of either Drugs or Alcohol and
