When observing the video titled “Basic Counseling Skills” the one thing I initially noticed was the patients anguish and concern. The patient is describing a traumatic experience she witness that involved a motor vehicle and resulted in an accident. Mr. Curtis seemed, very competent and experienced to help the client with her issues and did not seem overwhelmed by the client’s problem. Our book states, that “An effective interview can make a tremendous difference in the life of another human being” (Evans, 2011). Mr. Curtis, was constantly, ensuring he had all the pertinent information required to initiate the assessment process. The client is obviously concerned and although she seems motivated and eager to help herself, she is having difficulty letting go. One of the qualities that the counselor demonstrated, was the fact that he allowed the patient to be honest and express her limitations and set realistic goals. Good counseling, is all about helping the client feel better, and steer the patient into making better choices and set healthy boundaries. The idea is for the patient to move from a poor emotional roller coaster to a good emotional well-being and make connections with others and ultimately replace all that fear, sadness, anxiety, frustration and trauma into happiness, peace, and most importantly gain, hopefulness for the
