I knew that I loved it the first time that I witnessed its beauty. The sweet smell of the fresh cut grass. The amazing sound of the ball hitting the glove on a perfect strike. The incredible sound of the ball hitting the wood bat in the sweet spot, and being sent four hundred or more feet for a homerun. Baseball captivated me and it also gave me, an un-athletic big guy with a neck problem that disallows playing any contact sports, a place in the world of sports that I love so dearly. I remember growing up and idolizing Canadian stars, like Justin Morneau and Larry Walker, the superstars from my favourite team, the Toronto Blue Jays, like Carlos Delgado and Roy Halladay, and the stars that were always told that they could not make it, but managed to find a way anyways, like Dustin Pedroia. The reason you are struggling so much is that you are not self confident, and you haven’t been able to accept and learn from failure. Because of your struggles, you are overthinking everything way too much and putting unneeded pressure on yourself. You aren’t trusting yourself enough. You need to remember that baseball is not only a thinking game, but a game of failure as well. Even the best players fail seven out of ten times, yet remain confident in themselves. If you do that, I guarantee you that success will follow.”
I took everything Jim told me to heart and the rest of that season was incredible. With new-found confidence, and the ability to learn from my mistakes, I was beginning to hit the ball with consistency, and everything was becoming much easier. My team wound up making it to the finals that year, where we unfortunately lost a tough game. For most of my teammates, it ruined a great season. For me, however, it turned out to be a valuable learning experience, as it made me vow to be better and get back to the finals next
