We sat on the hot metal of the bleachers outside of the baseball field. The rainy days of Spring were replaced with the sweltering heat of the Summer, and hearing the clink of a baseball hit a bat in the Summer had become a tradition for almost five years. My older brother Dakota had spent those years being bombarded by sweat, mud, and the encouragement of his family, friends, and coaches when the team needed to hit a ball or when he wanted to show off how much better he had gotten since the last season. We were all ready for the season to be over so that we could plan our almost yearly trip to Virginia to visit our Aunt, Uncle, and our almost overwhelming blue-eyed cousins, Liam and Carlile. When the baseball season had come to a happy--or sad--ending, we would plan the trip and be piling into the car within the next week or two, to go on the getaway …show more content…
I looked out the smudged window covered in fingerprints and smiled as we pulled out of our now empty driveway, getting prepared for the four hour car ride to the wild, open fields of Virginia. I dreaded the ride, but welcomed the adventure. I fell asleep and awoke again. I looked out of the smeared windows again, but this time looked into the fields of Virginia. The deer gnawing on the grass with the fawns, the big, bulky trees bursting with bright green leaves, and the birds freely soaring through the vivid sky. Excitement built up inside of me. We were about an hour away from my aunt’s house; I loved the thought of being with my family, but I also loved the daring and silly activities that we did when we got there. That summer, we had gone to a strawberry farm. I thought that it was going to be incredibly monotonous and absurd; but I was wrong. It was torrid and unbearable in the summer heat, and when we arrived there, I sat back and dreaded the walk, but the summer brought great things to that

It was Saturday lunchtime. The hot summer sun beat down on the faces of the families in the stands during the last Little League game of the season. Moms, finding comfort in the familiar faces of friends forged through three months of uncomfortable green bleachers, bee stings and sunburns, chatted casually about the back-to-school sales for the upcoming year. A handful of men, still intently focused on the games, paced by the backstop, shouting advice to their progeny, perhaps envisioning a MLB baseball legacy.…

Baseball: the sport where you stand around for 20 minutes and move 3 feet to the left and move 3 feet to the right. It’s so intense. It’s so intense that you could take a nap on the field with everything out there. Of course, I’m being sarcastic. The only time it’s actually fun is when you’re annihilating the other team while they’re asleep on the field.…

The baseball diamond has a magical effect on my emotions, which produce so much energy it seems to take over my body and mind. I’ll never forget my first baseball glove and bat. It was spring time in 1983, the snow had finally melted, robins were singing on bare tree branches and the maple trees were blooming. My father took me into town driving our Burgundy 1980 Chevy Malibu Classic. As we parked the car, I asked my dad” what are we doing here”?…

The game of baseball has always been in my life since I was a child. My love for the game began when I was five years of age signing up for tee ball at the local little league. As a child, I would imagine myself as a professional ballplayer. I would mimic my idols every chance I had or I would dream of myself being in a critical situation to win the game and to make history. Now, I am chasing my dream by trying to become one of those greats who played the game.…

The Prius wasn’t...a new car. It was several years old, actually, and even if it hadn’t been Lucinda’s family would have done good work on it and you might have thought that it was. A booster seat was buckled haphazardly in the back next to an abandoned McDonald’s bag that held a single decaying fry, which clung to its short fast-food life with all the desperation of students on their last day of summer. I could relate. When I got in, my friend apologized for the “old weed” smell - her older brother had taken the car earlier in the week.…

What I was looking forward to doing my senior year, was leading my team as a senior to the best we could be. I was working harder than I ever had all winter long leading up to this. I had one goal that I did not see happen any of my four years there, which was getting to the state championship. There were a lot of things that had to go right for this to happen. The team had to be good, they had to work hard every day, they had to win districts, they had to win regional’s, and the most importantly the team had to get along great they have to be a family.…

The warmness of the afternoon mixed with the cool breeze blowing lightly tickled my nose as I swung in a white crochet hammock. I could hear the faint sound of the lapping of the lake on the rocky shore. Bugs chirped to say goodbye to summer and the sun cast across the water making it glimmer. I looked across the water to cherry island which I longed to visit but my mom and dad told me no because it was private. I saw the old boat "patches" resting on the grass near the shore drying.…

I ambled around my family's spacious property, the same property I had traipsed around almost every day in my life. I had walked this property feeling elated, dejected, and even puzzled, but today I was feeling as aggravated as I feel when a teacher gives out homework on a sunny day. I would have much rather been inside my comforting house, eating a delectable dinner, as delicious to me as any five star restaurant, with my family, than looking for my annoying brother. Through our dense treeline, I yet walked, to our mystical pond. Dodging the constant tree branches, I became more and more irritated.…

I asked as I walked around jem beca my friend's dog and we smelled the cool crisp wind flowing around me. “I don't care”, she said as she unhooked Jems long leash from a old oak tree,a bubbly feeling from the pit of my stomach as we started to run down the hill with jem close behind and her gold fur waving in the wind.…

This is the kind of October morning no other month can touch. A world tinted in sharp colors of rust orange, royal reds, and chocolate browns. The trees are beginning to shrug off the summer.
