It took Bartolomeu from Portugal all the way to the southern tip of Africa. He named landscapes along the way, like the Cape of Good Hope. It was originally the Cape of Storms, or Cabo Tormentoso, but they wanted to encourage trade, not scare everyone away. So therefore, the name was changed. After Bartolomeu came home from his first voyage, he soon set out on another one. Ironically enough, his ship, as well as three others, ended up sinking in the Cape of Hope on May 29th. He drowned there as well as all of the members of the crew during a storm. It is said that the information concerning the beginning of his voyage is limited due to some of the documents having been burnt in the castle of São Jorge.
