Bartolomeu Dias Who is Bartolomeu Dias? He was a Portuguese nobleman born somewhere around the year of 1450, in Algarve, Portugal. He died on May 29th in the year 1500, on his second voyage in the ocean. Bartolomeu Dias, in full it is Bartolomeu Dias de Novais, was known as the first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa in the year 1488. He’s said to have been related to Diogo Dias as well as Pero Dias ( https://www.britannica.com/biography/Bartolomeu-Dias ). However, just what did Bartolomeu do that was worth remembering? Bartolomeu, also known as Bartholomew Diaz, nearly the same thing, went to school at the University of Lisbon. Soon after that, King John II appointed him to lead an expedition around the southern tip of Africa, hoping that they could find a trade route towards India. He was also appointed to search for lands ruled by ‘an evil Christian priest’, Prester John. With all of this on his shoulders, he set off in ships called caravels to do the mission that had been set for him.

It was originally the Cape of Storms, or Cabo Tormentoso, but they wanted to encourage trade, not scare everyone away. So therefore, the name was changed. After Bartolomeu came home from his first voyage, he soon set out on another one. Ironically enough, his ship, as well as three others, ended up sinking in the Cape of Hope on May 29th. He drowned there as well as all of the members of the crew during a storm. It is said that the information concerning the beginning of his voyage is limited due to some of the documents having been burnt in the castle of São Jorge.
