Watching a movie based on a story can be different. When reading the characters make look and sound different in the reader's mind but during a movie the characters may be different than what the reader suspected. Listening is the understanding of spoken words. Reading is the understanding of written words. When reading a speech the reader uses their own accent or does not put emphasis on words that the speaker may want the reader to know. For example in Barbara Jordan’s “Keynote Speech to the Democratic National Convention, 1976” Jordan says “We are attempting to fulfill our national purpose, to create and sustain a society in which all of us are equal.” The reader is reading this in their own accent while Barbara Jordan is speaking it with a england accent. The reader would only know to put a accent on a word if the word had a accent mark over it. While listening to a speech the listener can hear the speakers accent. Everyone has different accents when speaking or saying words. For example in Barbara Jordan’s “Keynote Speech to the Democratic National Convention,” Jordan says “I, Barbara Jordan, am a keynote speaker.” Barbara Jordan is from texas so Jordan says this quote with a deep southern accent. When reading a speech the reader can identify repetition easier than someone listening to a speech. For example in Barbara Jordan’s “Keynote Speech to the Democratic National Convention,” Jordan says “We are a people i n a quandary about the present. We are a people in search of our future. We are a people in search of a national community. We are a people trying not only to solve the problems of the present, unemployment, inflation.” The reader can understand easily that Barbara Jordan is showing the reader that the speech is emphasizing the phrase “We are a people” a lot in the speech to get the point across that americans are all one and equal. While listening to a speech repetition may just fly over the listener head and may not understand the point that the speaker is getting across. For example in Barbara Jordan’s “Keynote Speech to the Democratic National Convention,” Jordan says “But there is something different about tonight. There is something special about tonight. What is different? What is special?” Reading repetition and listening to it are very different. The listener may not understand what the speaker is trying to get across while the reader can comprehend what is being said because the words are right on the page.
