Barb Thorson: An Exemplary Leader

Improved Essays
Barb Thorson is an amazing mother, wife, follower of God, and she was an amazing dance coach. From the years I was in eighth to eleventh grade Barb was the head coach of the Saint Mary’s Saintiques. Barb mainly worked with the varsity team, but even when she was not explicitly coaching junior high or junior varsity, she was still extremely involved with both teams. I chose Barb as my version of an exemplary leader for numerous reasons. At practice Barb dedicated her full attention to the dancers; no matter what was going on in her outside life, when she was at practice, the girls came first. When coaching, Barb found a way to have balance between being our coach and being strict and acting as a second mother to us all. Barb was always caring

According to Merriam-Webster, a coach is defined as, “a person who teaches and trains the members of a sports team and makes decisions about how the team plays during games.” A coach is much more than what Merriam-Webster defines it as. To be a coach is to be a leader, a mentor, and a role model. A coach must set the standard and lead by example. Five years ago, I began volunteer coaching my son’s youth sports teams.…

The leadership role in which I have had the greatest positive influence in has been as the Fine Arts Commissioner in ASB. As the Fine Arts Commissioner, it is my responsibility to showcase the performing arts in any way I possibly can, and while I have successfully done that, I’ve also successfully created a new rally that now occurs every year. Even though last year was my first year on ASB, I still made an impact on my school by taking charge of said new rally. My ASB director wanted to try having an on-campus winter dance before winter break and we figured the best way to promote the new dance would be through a rally. In addition, my ASB director didn’t want to have cheer and dance perform in this rally, for they perform in every other…

I was giving advice a few days ago, and I was able to summarize it up with a simple "Be Barbossa" and reference to this scene in the above gif. This was specifically dealing with a game I play, but then I realized it was applicable to real life, and then I had to explain myself, because I was tired and for a moment, it seemed like I was encouraging piracy. Barbossa did what he felt he needed to do, at all times, to accomplish his goal. I don't believe he was really a bad guy, even with the mutiny (Really, have you seen Jack? I don't blame Barbossa for the mutiny at all.)…

Coaches have the power to change lives. I can humbly say this as all my coaches, both good and bad, have taught me in some way what it takes to be a good athlete and most importantly how to be a good human being. They have taught me life lessons that I can only hope to preserve by instilling them into my athletes in my time as a coach. The articles I have chosen to highlight in this essay show how coaches have helped to develop character in athletes, how they pushed them to be the best on and off the field of play, and illustrate how they stepped into the lives of athletes and became so much more than just a coach.…

. For a leader to successfully use ethics, they must continue to use the stairs. Climbing the stairs once and then figuratively using the elevator to revisit floors will lead to the breakdown of personal ethics. The stairwell climb between floors is what allows a person to develop, understand and connect each aspect of ethics. Using the ethics determined by this step-by-step process will provide an individual with an ethical theory that can be implemented in decision-making and other actions regarding leadership.…

When interacting with others, individuals have the tendency to associate their reactions, thoughts, and feelings, that occur during a conversation, to other individuals they know or experiences they have had. For example, I may meet a girl in a bar who reminds me of my ex-girlfriend, and thus, I cannot give her my undivided attention because I am too distracted with her similarities to my ex-girlfriend. When this phenomenon occurs in therapy, it is referred to as countertransference. Freud (1910) argued that, when it does occur in therapy, countertransference can have a negative effect on the therapist’s ability to treat the client.…

To be a leader of such a group you have to hold yourself to the highest regard, remain fair, honest, ahead of the curve in schooling, sports, and teacher and student relations. It also takes humility, self sacrifice, grace, accountability, and constantly striving to be your better self, not competing with the group, but rather yourself. Additionally, being well spoken, a personal presence in a crowd, and to be able to command a room, but speaking with people, not at them.…
