Some differences between a bacteriophage and a bacterium are that bacterium is longer than bacteriophage, some bacterium have more of a negative affect than bacteriophage on humans, bacteriophage is non-living and the bacterium is living. The bacteriophage in the text is the T-4 bacteriophage which is 200nm in length and 80-100nm wide. The bacterium in the text is the E. coli (Escherichia coli) which is 3000nm in length, which is significantly bigger than the T-4 bacteriophage. Also, E. coli bacterium eaten could cause severe stomach cramps when the E.coli strains live in the human intestine, they also provide vitamin K and B-complex. Whereas, a T-4 bacteriophage or T-even bacteriophage, is harmless …show more content…
It has many functions such as delivering the genome, interactions of virus with cells, and includes protection of the genome from nucleolytic enzymes. The virion extended tail fibres and hits the bacterium and the bacteriophage is triggered and starts hosting the virus.
The structure of a T-even bacteriophage consists of a head in an icosahedral shape, 20 sides, which is called the capsid. Attached to the capsid is a rod-shaped tail with retractable sheath, and the central tail is completely hollow. Which is a tube that connects the head to the spider-like legs that are tails. This is exactly the way the bacteriophage delivers the viral genetic material, when the virus lands on the surface of a bacteria, the tube portion contracts, then the legs or tails of the virus inject the genetic materials into the bacterium.
Bacteriophage could be used to combat bacterial diseases in the process called bacteriophage therapy. This is when viruses are injected or transported to the place of the bacterial disease, then the virus located and destroys the bacteria which fights infections. This is better than regular antibiotics because they try to kill all of the bacteria that the antibiotic passes. However, phages only target the bacteria they are designed to kill, which is better because it doe not disturb the normal microbial balance in the …show more content…
After the production is finished, then the phage nucleic acids and structural proteins assemble.
There is only one type of tailed bacteriophages which are known as caudovirales. But there are three families of caudovirales which are myoviridae, podoviridae, and siphoviridae. All of these claudovirales bacteriophages are categorized based on their structure and the possession of potential homologous genes. Caudovirales or tailed bacteriophages are found in over 140 prokaryote genera which covers the bacterial and archaeal phylogenetic trees.
Viruses are not classified as living because they do not have any of the traditional properties of life but it can reproduce. Viruses can not respond to the environment, can not grow independently, can not utilize energy, can not maintain homeostasis, is not made up of cells, and can not make evolutionary adaptations. They also can not reproduce without the aid of a host cell. Moreover, viruses are not classified as
