Background Influence

I do feel that background influences do affect how we interact in a group whether it be a small or large group. I am definitely more comfortable in a small group setting. I am an introvert and I am very reserved so I try to listen more than talk. However, I do like to input my opinions and present ideas to the group. I feel that I am fairly creative and like to look at all aspects of a situation. Also, I feel more comfortable with female group members than male group members because I feel we can relate to each other in many ways. I can say that I prefer to work with people close to my age or older for the fact that I have not had good experiences. For, example when I have worked with group members that are younger there are usually issues

Reflection Over that three assignments above and the other assignments we have done over this quarter I have noticed a way of think and formating I do when starting a assignment. When starting an assignment I don't start or finish things in order I'll do the main requirements for what goes where and create how ever many pages it needs then I’ll Start the assignment in the middle where I'm doing the main most important part first. For example this project I started with the hard moments essay instead of a title screen just to get it out of the way. I've noticed I don't talk much in class, even though I used to always get in trouble in language arts and reading for talking because I hated those classes, but not speaking much in class doesn't mean I don't contribute to class. I think I contribute a good amount I volunteer for questions (Sometimes).…

The overall purpose of group therapy is to assist clients in emotional growth and personal problem solving. The basic principles of group work are; stages of group process development, groups dynamics at each stage, and leader tasks and techniques. As a leader of a group it is important to convene the group, model appropriate behavior, focus on the present, and use professional support. I have never been a part of a formal group meeting; however, I have participated in informal group discussions. Prior to my sibling being diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, someone within my nuclear family unit organized a family meeting that took place in the dining room. The family members sat around the circular table and addressed their concerns with his problem behavior. There were no formal procedures to guide the conversation but instead family members would interject when they felt inclined to do so. My father assumed the facilitator role and informally greeted the group and provided us with an overview of the purpose of the meeting.…

Gender specific groups are more effective than integrated groups, because men and women process experiences in different ways, and they respond differently to each other in more open ways when in the company of their own gender. Women tend to more inward focused, while men tend to be outward focused. Women groups are structured different than men’s groups in that women need bonding with other women in order to find their inner strength Corey, Corey & Corey (2010) point out “Members learn that they are not alone, and they share and begin to critically explore the messages they have internalized about their self-worth and their place in society” (p.370). Women learn how to be women in their groups, from each other. Women need to feel safe, before…

In my opinion, it is the combination of both the peer group and a person’s family members that affect the way people communicate with one another. Even though I do not come from a multicultural background, I can relate to Tan’s approach of using different dialects depending upon whom she is speaking with at that time. For example, I work at a hotel and diner, the hotel registration is located in the diner. When I am communicating with a guest it is dramatically different than if I were to carry on a conservation with one of the servers whose age ranges from late teens or early twenties.…

In the early 1950s, psychologist Solomon Asch (1907-1996) demonstrated the power of group influence and the susceptibility of the individual to blind conformity. Asch's experiments involved subjects within groups of confederates all of whom agreed unanimously on an obviously wrong answer, such as the comparative lengths of two lines depicted in a drawing. Those experiments revealed that many subjects will change their answer and support the group's consensus instead of maintaining their original position without being influenced by the group (Gerrig & Zimbardo, 2008). "It is thought that various factors determine whether or not (or to what degree) different people are susceptible to group influence. Generally, the size of the group, its degree…

I definitely talk differently depending on the people that are around me. I do this depending on how comfortable I am with someone and how I want them to view me. For example, when I am talking to my friends I act like a complete idiot because I really don’t care what they think about me, and I know that they are not going to view me different. Also, they act the same way, so it makes me feel better, and they also don’t determine what my life is going to be like in the future. On the other side of the spectrum, if I’m talking to a coach or scout, I am going to show all of my respect and attention.…

Whether you are a part of a social group or on a group project for school or work everyone has the want and need to be included, when group members don’t feel like they have fully been accepted in to the group they can become withdrawn and anti-social which would lead them to not be a contributing part of the team. Having a diverse group of people on a team can help a team more effectively and efficiently reach their common goal. If everyone on the team had the exact same life experiences, was the same age and the same culture they more than likely would have the same general way to approach the group’s common goal. Having diversity on the team can help generate more ideas because everyone’s life experiences and cultural differences have helped form the way they think and the way that they solve problems. Roles, needs and diversity affect a group’s teamwork immensely because if members aren’t performing their specific goal and only focusing on a self-centered role the groups work will either multiply for the other members of the group or the group’s common goal might not be met.…

Working in groups gives off the notion that group members will have to do less work. However, we are usually given group work because the project is too much work for a single to person to do alone. Using this idea, each person should still be putting in the same amount of time and effort as if they were doing a project on their own. However, this is not always the case. This is where social loafing comes in.…

I started this job in January and I chose to observe my coworkers because I spend most of my time at work and it was a new environment. At Starbucks, employees are called partners to give them a sense of belonging and involvement in the company. The store I work at is at Pawnee and Seneca and there are fifteen partners. However, since I often only work in the afternoon I do not have a chance to observe everyone.…
