Babylon Revisited Essay

I enjoyed reading the story “Babylon Revisited” by, F Scott Fitzgerald. It is a little up and down to decided whether Charlie really had changed. At the beginning of the story, Charlie leaves his brother-in-laws address with a bartender to give to an old friend. “If you see Mr. Schaeffer, give him this. It’s my brother-in-laws address”. The address he left was for and old drinking buddy he use to hangout with in his wild days. When Charlie accidently runs into him and another one of his friends he wants nothing to do with them. When he’s invited to spend some time with them he shoots back with “cant do it”( ) And thinking that “he was glad for an excuse” ( ) You can tell by the way he’s acting that he doesn’t want to be around those party …show more content…
He is confused as to why they showed up and how they got his in-laws address. What he doesn’t remember is he is the reason how they found the house was because his friend is the one he left the address for. Charlie really seemed to not know how they found him. He argues with his brother-in-law saying, “I didn’t tell them to come here. They warmed your name out of somebody”. ( )
Charlie does want to change is old habits but the fact that he forgot he left his address makes me question if all of him is ready to change or if subconsciously he still wants to be around those people. If he changes he gets a chance at being able to have his daughter but maybe something in the back of his mind is telling him he’s not ready
On the other hand Charlie is almost complete sober, not like he use to be. He used to do dumb things when he was drunk. Like when he stole “a tricycle and pedaled Lorraine all over the Eboile between the small hours of dawn”.( ). Since those days, now he only has one drink a day. This shows that he really may have changed. Charlie lets his sister-in-law know by telling her, “I only take one drink every afternoon, and I’ve already had that”(

To add on, Charlie now understands that the individuals that are supposed to be his friends are really embarrassing him. When Charlie goes to the party he realizes why the people always laugh at him, he says “I never knew before that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around just to make fun of me. Now I know what they mean when they say “to pull a Charlie Gordon,” (Keyes 42). Uniquely, this shows that Charlie finally realized that he is always a person they laughed at and that they were not his friends after all.
