Dear _________ ,

At The Baby Fold, there is a special energy at back to school time.
Our Hammitt School teachers, although they have been teaching all summer long, still get excited to welcome the students back in the fall. Many foster and adoptive children are feeling both excited and nervous as they bravely walk into new classrooms. Our residential children are eagerly getting on buses to take them back to school. In all cases, education helps shape who these children will become.
Whether The Baby Fold is directly educating a child or helping to create a stable family environment so a child can learn, the goal is the same. We strive to create well-being in the lives of these children so they can reach their full potential and fully contribute to our communities.
By addressing the social, emotional, and education needs of children we allow them to use and discover the God-given gifts and talents each of them has inside.

Together we can help children maximize their potential. In doing so, we help our communities maximize their potential as well.
At The Baby Fold, we want all of our children and families have what they need to be successful in school - and in life. Join us in helping our children get the most out of their education by giving generously to The Baby Fold.
With Sincere Thanks,

Dianne Schultz
CEO

P.S. Supporting the programs at The Baby Fold helps our children, and our communities, reach their full potential. Please consider sending in the enclosed card with your show of support as the children head back to school. Thank

In the novel, Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids, author, Alexandra Robbins, argues that it is not good for the students to be under an extreme amount of pressure in school and I certainly agree with this statement. Parents are often the ones who place an excessive amount of pressure on their children to succeed, even starting before they are born. This pressure that parents place on their children can lead to immoral behavior, such as cheating. The overachieving students may come across as perfect on the outside, but by having so much pressure placed on them to be perfect, they may get into a mindset where they focus too much on comparing their standardized test scores and GPAs with other students’, causing them to be left feeling…

This weekend, November 20th-22nd I worked a poverty simulation through Mission Waco. I first went through the poverty simulation during my first semester at Baylor with my Poverty in Developing Countries class taught by Janet Dorrell. I have been learning about the causes and effects of poverty for about a year now, but for the first time I was able to look at poverty through a different perspective as I looked for ways in which it affects education. The first portion of the poverty simulation begins on Friday night; everyone is allowed to keep four of their items and is given forty-one dollars of fake money for the weekend expenses, which include, food, clothing, and potentially shelter inside. On Saturday morning, those who paid for breakfast get to eat from an assortment of chips and some coffee.…

Use of Time Furthermore, an FDK program provides children with large block of time so that they can be able to have enough meaningful play at the different centers. When planning large group instruction activities, educators take into account the attention span of the children, duration they have been in school, how familiar are they with routines, strength , needs and interest in order to adjust time accordingly (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2010). The FDK team takes the following into consideration when planning small group or individualized activities: • Provide opportunity for revisiting previous activities • Plan for daily block of time for play • Consider attention span of the children…

Impacts on Social Justice and Social Change Robin Clark’s legacy and lifelong leadership skills has had sustainable long term impacts on the child protection system, as she had identified gaps throughout her career and strived towards social justice and social change. As mentioned earlier, Robin Clark demonstrated a form of robust compassion and empathy built on the rights of children and young people, as she was acutely aware of what children must be protected from; trauma, abuse and neglect. Robin Clark recognised that for each child and young person to reach their full potential requires more than ensuring basic protections (Clark, 1998).…

Through this statement President Barack Obama is calling for action. He is telling people to go out into their communities and be the difference that they want to see rather than waiting on others to make that difference. This is a very easy statement to agree with. That change could be something as simple as voting for a politician that truly represents the community or going into a local park with the intention of picking up trash. These actions can contribute towards making the community more beneficial for all members.…

For the past year, I have been a volunteer tutor through the Gems after-school program at the Foundry. The Foundry is a Christian Community Center that serves the impoverished West End of my hometown of Bowling Green, Kentucky. The goal of the program is to provide a supportive environment for the children to flourish educationally, socially, physically, and spiritually. Engaging in Gems has been an overwhelming experience because it has opened my eyes to a sector of my community that I was previously unfamiliar with. I attended a private elementary and middle school; my teachers and parents, along with my mentors and siblings, have continuously encouraged me to prioritize my education by helping me with schoolwork and creating a home atmosphere that promotes intellectual stimulation.…

In retrospect, Jami inviting me into the staff meeting my first day, and introducing me to this specific group of agendas was a wise move of supervision. Not only did she allow me the opportunity to introduce myself on my terms, disclosing how much or little as I desired, but she also discreetly introduced me to a wide-variety of issues that are relevant to the field and specific to this agency. Additionally, in this meeting I began to see Jami’s supervision style to be relaxed, yet firm. She habitually invites all members of the staff to share their opinions, expertise, and support.…

A Personal Philosophy of Education and Learning I firmly believe that children, regardless of circumstances all have the capability to learn and teach others something meaningful and important. The time just needs to be taken to find the method the child can best use to do this. Not all children are equal in how they learn or express the ideas that they learn and it should be our job to help find that method and allow for the child to use it at its fullest potential. Both the ideas of multiple intelligence and the use of children teaching their peers as an explorative community can help blossom this ability to learn and communicate.…

“Children are not things to be molded, but people to be unfolded.” This is a quote by Jess Lair, a former professor at Montana State University, and is something that has stuck with me for many years now. I’ve volunteered in my church’s nursery for the past six years and I also work as a nanny for three children. Being able to work with young minds and help them discover news things is one of the best feelings for me. As much as I love doing other activities, such as playing piano and guitar, if I had to choose, I would continue working with children.…
