According to Irving Janis (1982), groupthink is a theory that a group cannot make an accurate and effective decision, because group members so desperately want to make a harmony and consensus team circumstance that they pressure to minimize necessary conflict and make a decision without critical evaluation of alternative solutions. A team will be passiveness since they do not have any alternative solution once some unexpected things happen.
Fortunately, many experts found many remedies after many research and studies. To recognize that productive conflict is good is the first step to avoid groupthink (Kenney & Nilson, 2008). Difficult people in a group setting is one of these factors. Therefore, it is necessary to learn how to deal with difficult people in a group setting. From my perspective, there are three strategies can help to deal with difficult people: avoiding to be difficult, picking battles, and separating them. No matter which type of strategy that you choose, the first thing is to identify the person. By identifying the person, you will know what you deal with and the connection between they and the work. Then you can choose strategy to deal with them. If the connection between this person and the work is low and he or she is hard to handle, you can choose the last strategy-separating them. By separating him or her out of the work will save time and avoid many unnecessary conflict. Not every difficult people will be difficult during work. If you can know this person so much and he or she is important for this work, you can choose the first one-avoiding to be difficult. You can find out a way to manipulate him or her to be a baby based on what you know about him or her. Sometimes it is ineluctable. If this person is important for this work and he or she is very “tough”, you can choose picking battles. Just to aware that you need to think twice before you

    I believe that the reason most decisions about the dilemma in our scenario were solved without too much hassle can be attributed to shared values. The AASW Code of Ethics lists respect for persons, social justice and professional integrity as the core values of social work (AASW, 2010).
