When I was little, I would wake up to the slight smell of tobacco. I did not know what it was back then. I even thought it was just the natural smell of my mom. I wondered why she coughed constantly, so I asked my sister, “Is mommy sick?” She didn’t answer me. After this six-month internship, I used the knowledge to do outreach and present in the Berkeley community and Berkeley High classrooms. I designed workshops to help students understand tobacco and its negative health impacts. I strengthened important skills such as working with diverse populations, communication, and public speaking. It was no small feed for me because I was an English Language Learner who had been in the U.S. for only a few months. I was shy and quiet; I didn’t know how to treat peers in Berkeley High as students. But I felt fulfilled when helping others to change the way they live. Through outreach and community health events, I learned that a surprising number of my peers know nothing about the problems with tobacco. This fact highlighted the importance of my work. I urged my facilitator to conduct more workshops and presentations for Berkeley High students so that we could prevent a lot of students from smoking and save their lives.
