Introduction: Within our society, special education in a school environment is viewed as a group of students who have social, mental, or physical disabilities. Throughout this research, autistic student’s behavior and traits will be analyzed from different perspectives. Autism has been an ongoing issue throughout the centuries across demographic groups. Autism, known as a type of special education, is not known to have any social, ethnic or racial boundaries (Dyches, 2014). According to the American Psychiatric Association, autism is known to be a neurodevelopmental syndrome with deficits in social reciprocity and communication, and repetitive behaviors that can be seen in students (2000). Furthermore, in the Unites States, we have an Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd, 2017 where several organizations tend to spread awareness and try to fundraise to help those in need. Although special education programs are well-funded in the United States school curriculum, autism, being one of them, can bring numerous challenges in the classroom environment; therefore, teachers should implement and modify their lesson plans to better assist them in controlling their abilities.
Challenges of Autism in an educational environment: Teachers may face several challenges while working with special education students which is why they should implement the strategies below in their lesson plans. Turnbull indicates that special education allows teachers to “combine different values and classroom techniques (1995). In Idol’s study involving elementary and secondary schools, they determined the “degree of inclusion of students with disabilities in general education classes” (2006). Idol states that the educators took a more conservative way of teaching students with disabilities and they had an instructional assistant along them, which favored the students. Similarly, from personal experience of attending BISD, their district statement for special education service indicates
