Parenting style refers to the practices adopted by parents during their children's growth and socialization stages and how the children are controlled. There are four main types of parenting style: Authoritarian, Authoritative, Permissive and Uninvolved .However, different cultures favour different styles of parenting toward their children as they are brought up in different environment. Dornbusch et al. (1987) compared the school performance of students based on parenting styles. The outcome indicates that students whose parents utilised authoritative style performed preferred in school over students whose parents utilised other parenting style (cited in Taylor et al 1995, p.294). Moreover, Ishak states that authoritative parenting styles has greater effect of academic self-concept on academic achievement compared to authoritarian (2012, p.487). Besides, Kulasingam et al. states that Chinese authoritative parenting style has positive correlation with school achievement while authoritarian parenting style has a negative correlation (2009, p.145). As cited in Ishak (2012, p.490), this is because authoritative parenting style can produced children that are more socially and instrumentally competent (Darling 2003), possess high self-esteem and curiosity (Horner 2003) , are responsible, confident and creative, which will result in good academic achievement (Steinberg 2003). Children of this style receive warmth and encouragement from their parents, therefore they have motivation to develop academic achievement (Kulasingam et al 2009, p.145).
