It is a cognitive leadership style that can manage stress, has intelligence, is task-oriented, and is able to communicate with their employees. Also, a cognitive leader will use their own experiences when making decisions. It is these traits together that makes the cognitive leader competent in a business setting. Shared leadership is a simple idea, but the execution is difficult. For a safety leader, shared leadership is a great idea since it takes everyone to make a safe facility run because, it truly is a team effort. When it comes to a manufacturing facility, most companies have a safety program, and within the safety program, management has different levels of responsibility throughout the company. No one person wants the entire responsibility of a manufacturing site’s safety on their shoulders, so the idea of shared leadership is ideal for the safety leader. In order for this to occur, a shift would need to happen at all levels, from the CEO to the employee level itself. “The shift would need to transition the way decisions are made, change the relationship dynamic with the team and all teams below, and shifting the mindset of everyone to a shared leadership role” (Fitzsimons, 2016, p. 4). The biggest key to any well run safety program is to motivate the performance of the employees taking responsibility for their safety program. The result will be the reduction or elimination of accidents, and thus, creating less cost for the company. Organizational culture mixed with strong leadership and a strong safety culture with employee involvement will result in improved business practices, and create an improved safety performance for everyone.
