The Australian Shepherd is one of the happiest and most loyal dog breeds on the planet. They are spirited, affectionate and aim to please. Vigorous exercise is essential, both for the body and the mind. Born to run, Aussies need more than daily walks. They need a yard with enough room to get up some speed and really run. Their powerful hips and shoulders literally push them along their way as they run. Instinctive herders, while at play with other pooches, Aussies will run in a large arc to try and contain their mates or race back and forth along a fence. The general assumption is that the breed evolved from the range of herding dogs that arrived in the United States with our immigrant forefathers. They have been cultivated in America and are considered American dogs. They share many physical characteristics with the rough Collie – long nose, tipped ears, general size and build – and the Australian Koolie – merle markings in blue and red with white collars - but it is likely that many herding breeds are in the mix. In 1991 the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Australian Shepherd as a member of the working dog
