Drug use is a large issue within Australia and has many different outstanding negative effects on individuals and the surrounding society. The two different types of drugs are illegal and legal, one example of an illegal drug is cannabis which is a drug that can be smoked or eaten. Cannabis is from the family of plants that has hemp. Cannabis can be smoked or eaten and weakens judgment and response time. An example of a legal drug is alcohol, alcohol is the part of beverages that intoxicates us. It is also a depressant drug which means that it slows vital functions and in Western-Australians approximately 1-13 drink daily.

Alcohol has many negative effects on the user. Negative effects of the consumption of alcohol include the fact that it has the ability to harm different organs such as the brain, liver, and heart. The brain is affected due to the fact that excessive amounts of alcohol consumption leads to the death of brain cells which causes memory loss, learning difficulties, and different types of brain disorders. The liver is also affected because when alcohol makes its way to the liver the alcohol produces a toxic enzyme called acetaldehyde which can damage liver cells. The reason alcohol affects driving is the fact that the consumption of alcohol affects your judgement, concentration, and reaction time. Your judgement is affected is because it decreases the brain's electrical activities. Your concentration is changed as alcohol influences the executive functions of the brain, one being the ability to concentrate. Your reaction time is also affected as higher blood alcohol levels depress brain activity to a point where coordination and balance are temporarily impaired.
