August’s transition to school became explained better when we are told the story from his friends point of view. At one point in the book, Summer says “[w]ho knew that my sitting with August Pullman at lunch would be such a big deal?” (Palacio 119). This quote explains that August’s transition to school seemed difficult because nobody wants to be friends with him except for Summer who sits with him during lunch. August’s classmates are mean to him because of his deformities so nobody wants to be near him. Should School Start Later For Teens? Everyone morning, teens across America must wake up early for school. However, what some people do not realize is that teens are not getting enough sleep, but is absolutely vital that they do. The best solution for this is starting school later because not only are teens not getting enough sleep, but schools should also start later because starting school earlier encourages irregular sleep patterns and it is difficult for them to wake up and go to sleep earlier.…

A common argument against a later start time is bus tiers. The Morning Edition, an American radio news program, did a segment with a woman named Michelle Trudeau titled “High School Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens.” She speaks on the effect of school start time and discusses how one of the key roadblocks to changing school start times is the bus tier and extensive transportation scheduling (“High School Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens”). It is important to recognises this as something people try to use against a later start time, because it is a fair and valid point, but also one that can be overcome. It is a roadblock for a later start time simply because of how intricate and fine tuned a bus schedule is.…

As education is something we take for granted today, the idea that education up until recently, has been considered a luxury – available only to those able and willing to afford it, is surreal to us. As the demand for necessary universal education increased, opinions on schooling have shifted. In Horace Mann 's report for the Massachusetts Board of Education in 1848, he places confidence in the ability of education to be able to give people of all backgrounds an equal opportunity for success. He describes education as “the great equalizer of the conditions of men, – the balance-wheel of the social machinery”. Mann idealizes education as a force that will erase all class divides between people and provide them a sense of individualism.…

Twelve schools in the county are thinking about changing to a year-round school schedule, I agree with them wanting the change it because it is a lot more beneficial to the students. A benefit to the year round school schedule is that the students get more breaks. Since the students get more breaks, they have more opportunities for vacation. The group presentation about Year-Round Schooling had no effect to change my views, but after reading Huebner article my mind had shifted more to a neutral view. I would even considering working at a year-round school, which is surprising for me because I love my summer breaks. I feel that elementary students would adapt easier to year-round school because they love learning. For high school, it would be hard to convince them because they need that summer break to make money and become an adult. So, I was wondering if any districts had elementary students year-round and had high school students the traditional way?…

In the article, “Should School Start Later” by Justin O’Neill, he writes about how if school times change to be later, the kids will benefit greatly in school and at home. O’Neill wrote that kids would be more alert when in school, or at home. To start, he wrote that kids would be alert and more awake. Summer vacation is important for students who want a break from school. School causes stress for many students who try their hardest to succeed in academics. Taking away the one thing students look forward to, summer time, is a punishment to all in the school system. Switching to year-round school would cause students’ interests to decrease dramatically within the first year. Year-round school should not be endorsed because students would have more freedom, their sleeping schedules would be more flexible, and they would have more time for summer jobs.…
