Auditory failure is when someone’s sense of hearing is failing (hearing loss). This article relates to the Auditory Failure PowerPoint slide for the reason that Valerie got an infection in the mastoid which later led to her having the sensorineural type of hearing loss (one of the two main types of hearing loss). The two main types of hearing loss are Conductive Hearing Loss (“Damage to eardrum or ossicles”) and Sensorineural Hearing Loss (“Damage to the cochlea, hair cells, or auditory nerve”). On the PowerPoint slide it also talked about what a cochlear implant is (“electronic device that replaces the function of hair cells”) and what it helps with. From the article, Valerie was offered the option to get a cochlear implant for her auditory failure which at the time was the only one that might help her hear since the cochlear implant helps the sensorineural type of hearing loss. “Cochlear implants help people who are deaf or are hard of hearing.” After getting the cochlear implant surgery, the cochlear implant helped Valerie be able to hear and to stop feeling ignored when she talked to others. What I learned about hearing loss is that it happens to people as they age and it may happen to children. When children are deaf or hard of hearing ordinary speech is difficult to attain for them. Therefore, it is important to detect if children have hearing loss early. I also learned that cochlear implants pass the part of the ear that is injured and then they energize the nerve for hearing. Most importantly, I believe that this is a good example of auditory failure because Valerie was losing her sense of hearing and the cochlear implant helped her be able to hear again. Cochlear implants could make a difference not only for children, but for older people as
