Audism Unveiled Summary

In the documentary Audism Unveiled, there were a couple important aspects that I learned and one of them is the abuse deaf students encounter. Some of the deaf individuals experienced different kinds of abuse like being whacked with a ruler, placed outside class, being reminded of their deafness, and much more. Their stories about their public mainstream school experiences devastated me since it showcases how hearing people portray deaf individuals as “subhuman.” All they want is an education just like every single one of us does and yet it somehow is a dilemma due to their deafness. Another component was the mockery deaf people received from their family members when it came to dinner time. One of the deaf people recalled seeing everyone laughing …show more content…
It is a disturbing reminder of the malice hearing people can be when they think deaf people do not comprehend what they do, which is completely false. Furthermore, I endured a couple of surprises when watching this documentary, which was thought-provoking and enthralling. One of these surprises were the three pregnancy tactics to minimize the pool of deafness being spread. The procedures deaf pregnant women were supposed to undergo, such as screenings for potential deaf babies, aborting the baby or not, and then providing hearing for the baby. The theme of religion as a means of terminating deafness was a strategy that never dawned upon me. Parents who send their children to churches in order for their deafness to be cured through the rationale of their souls being pure is ridiculous. This revealed to me the extensive measures parents can do for their deaf children so they can be transformed to hearing. Religion in itself as a concept to cure the deafness within the population of children is an unfortunate part of deaf history. There were also the different kinds of hearing aids throughout the history of deaf people and how they have been altered consistently. Some of the deaf individuals mentioned wearing horns on their ears, having hearing aids on their chest, and then the current cochlear implants. The subject of the evolution of hearing aids in terms of deaf history was something that I had no knowledge of until viewing this documentary. Now I have a general sense of the innovations established to help cure deaf people from their deafness and “restore” their
