Audience Considerations in Technical Communication
While there are many components taken into consideration before bringing a technical writing project, consideration to the audience rings supreme (McMurrey, 2015). Audience consideration is shaping a message to best suit the individuals receiving the message (McMurrey, 2015). In a simple analogy, audience consideration is the baby voice most people use with babies and toddlers, as well as the professional tone and verbiage utilized with an employer or authority figure. Additionally, there are an array of assessment categories which help further define the audience.

When it comes to technical writing for a senior audience, considering the cognitivist, social constructionist, and externalist approaches to rhetoric will aid in bridging possible communication gaps with the elderly (Allen, 2001). Cognitivist theory argues writers are capable of communicating as effectively as possible by through a generalized process (Allen, 2001). Social constructionist theory argues it is society which defines perspective, not the individual (Allen, 2001). While the theoretical perspective of externalist argues communicators can only guess at understanding communications (Allen, 2001). A two sentence summary of the article Eat Nuts, Live Longer? by Serena Gordon deigned for a senior demography can read as follows:
“Did you know, being nuts for nuts helps prevent an early death? One ounce of any nut per day is associated with a 7% decrease in early demise from any cause, and there is nothing nuts about that” (Gordon, 2013).

The summary focused with seniors in mind takes a light hearted approach to the addressing the health benefits of nuts in relation to very serious end of life health concerns. Also, the summary includes s specific statistic to aid in logos and ethos, with a dash of humor (nothing nuts about that) for pathos.

“According to PETA, fresh nuts are one of the top five vegan hangover remedies, thanks to a power punch of protein and sodium to regulate your body’s water levels. When things get crazy, you better gets nuts” (Vegan Hangover Cures, 2016).
Why it is effective: This summary highlights benefits of consuming nuts, while pandering to the current constructs of what a college students value system is thought to be.
