I believe Krakauer includes the story of Everett Ruess in his own story about Chris McCandless because they show similar traits and behaviors. Although McCandless is compared to Carl McCunn, Gene Rosellini, and John Waterman, Everett Ruess is the only one who was truly like Chris. These men shared similar qualities to McCandless, but none like Everett. When Chris first left on his journey he decided to keep his true identity a secret and changed his name, Ruess did the same he changed his name frequently. Everett went on his first hitchhiking and trekking journey at a young age, like McCandless Ruess spent his life alone out in the wilderness.…

In her realist novel, Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton strategically crafts a story that highlights the contrast between two opposing archetypal images, winter and darkness versus summer and light, in order to draw forth a comparison between the effect that both Zeena, Ethan’s wife, and Mattie, Ethan’s love interest, have on Ethan. Zeena’s stark personality and depressive aura causes her to exemplify the desolate qualities of winter, dragging Ethan into a life classified by lonely days and even lonelier nights. On the other hand, Mattie stands on the opposite side of the spectrum as seen in her warm personality that seemingly melts away the cold layer of isolation cast upon him by Zeena. This constant switching from liveliness to a lack of it characterizes Ethan as somewhat of a…

Chris McCandless’ actions can be seen as rebellious at first, but as time goes on, it is clear that there is hostility between his parents and himself that he does not want to face or try to fix. In a dysfunctional family, there are two extremes when it comes to the outcome of the children: the rebel or the conformist. Although the older child is typically the conformist and the younger child is the rebel, the McCandless family is a little different because both children are the rebels. Krakauer says, “Also like Chris, she clashed fiercely with Walt and Billie as an adolescent… [but] Carine made peace with her parents shortly after Chris disappeared” (129).…

One of my friends Kali Smith took the class last year and apparently knows everything there is about McGee, but apparently also was sworn to secrecy with the punishment of a tortuous death because she isn’t telling anyone anything, even her closest friends. Students like to joke about McGee that the reason he is so secretive is because he’s a spy, but I think it was just how he was raised. Or as Mr. Tonkavich would say, he is an angle that has been sent to us by God to protect us.…
