G- Atticus is devoted and concealed
I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In this journal I will be characterizing Atticus Finch and evaluating how Calpurnia has multiple ways she acts towards others. First off I will be characterizing Atticus Finch, Scout and Jem’s father. I believe that Atticus has two main traits. The initial one, I say, is how Atticus is very devoted. He is devoted to his occupation, his beliefs, and the overall well being of his children. In the novel Atticus says “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody …show more content…
It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn’t hurt you. So don’t let Mrs. Dubose get you down. She has enough troubles of her own”(Lee 144-145). This quote shows that even though Atticus is being called names because he is dedicated to his work, he overcomes these troubles. He does not care of other people’s opinions, he just focuses on his job. A quote to show how he is devoted to his belief states “I don’t see any harm in letting her go out there. Cal’d look after her there as well as she does here”(Lee 182). This shows that he strongly believes in Calpurnia and he is willing to stand up to Aunt Alexandra about it. A quote that shows Atticus is devoted to the well being of his kids. Atticus states “We decided that it would be best for you to have some feminine influence”(Lee 170). This shows that even though Aunty Alexandra is hard to deal with, he brought her in for the overall wellness of Scout. Atticus is also concealed. He doesn’t share much …show more content…
He is joyful but also stern and angry. First we have the happy and joyful side to him. Scout states “Jem thought he had enough money to buy a miniature steam engine for himself and a twirling baton for me”(Lee 134). This shows how Jem was kind enough to use his own birthday money to but something special for Scout. Another time Jem showed his kindness was at church. Scout shares “ Jem said it looked like they could save the collection money for a year and get some hymn-books”(Lee 165). This shows how Jem cares about the happiness of the church even though Jem is not supposed to like them because of their skin color. A final example is how he encourages his sister. Jem states “Don’t pay attention to her, just hold your head high and be a gentleman”(Lee 135). This shows hoe he really tries to keep his sister happy. The other side of Jem is angry and hurt. The first example is what he did to Mrs. Dubose. Scout states “He did not begin to calm down until he had cut the tops off every camellia bush Mrs. Dubose owned”(Lee 137). This shows how he has a complete mindset change and started being hasty towards an older lady. Another example is his sister. One side of him is nice and caring while the other tried to hurt her. Scout says “ Jem yanked my hair, said he didn’t care, he’d do it again if he got a chance, and if I didn’t shut up he’d pull every hair out of my head. I didn’t shut up
