Not long after Dalton's discovery of atoms, another English scientist named J.J. Thompson and other scientists of that time worked with cathode ray tubes. J.J. Thompson made some important discoveries. If you have ever seen a neon sign, an older computer monitor, or the color display on an ATM screen, then you have seen a cathode ray tube. "Thompson's cathode ray tube was glass with a metal piece called electrodes attached inside the tube. The electrodes were connected to the wire connected to the battery."
Parts of Atoms
Electron is a particle with negative charge. Because atoms are neutral, or not electrically charged, Thompson proposed that atoms also must contain a positive charge that balances the negatively charged electrons. "He

An ion is an atom with a charge due to changes in the number of electrons (negatively charged particles) in the atom. Ions that have lost electrons have a positive charge, and are called cations. Ions that have gained electrons have a negative charge, and are known as anions. Examples of…

If an atom has missing electrons, it will have a positive charge, and if has more electrons than protons, it will be negatively charged, this often happens when atoms transfer electrons. The transfer of electrons happens when two atoms bond. For example, when chlorine, which has 17 electrons (one missing to make a full outer shell of 8) bonds with sodium, which has one extra electron, because these atoms are the closest to having full valence (outermost) shells, they are the most reactive. So when sodium gives its extra electron to chlorine when the bond takes place, it now has a positive charge, as there are more protons than electrons.…

Ernest Rutherford’s model of the atom suggested the atom had a small, compact nucleus surrounded by a cloud of almost weightless electrons. Bohr proposed adding to the model the new idea of quanta put forth by Max Planck in 1901. That way, electrons existed in set levels of energy, that is, at set distances from the nucleus. His model was a huge leap forward in making theory fit experimental evidence that other physicists had found over time.…

In 1752 Benjamin Franklin conducted the famous kite and key experiment. Mr. Franklin tied a silk string to a kite and a metal key to the end of the string and flew it up into a storm cloud. As the lighting struck the kite he felt an electric spark come from the metal key. When this happened he had discovered that lightning was a form of electricity. This observation is what helped form what we know today as the lighting rod.…

The fear of lighting faded from the public, as the invention called lightning rod has been created and patented by Benjamin Franklin in 1749. The revolutionary invention utilized the nature of lighting studied by Franklin, and use its property to dissolve the lighting safely. As the invention was so effective in its job, the lighting rod became a traditional equipment in most of buildings. If the population thinks about a general image of Benjamin Franklin, they would imagine him with another one of his impactful invention, the bifocals. Giving people the ability to see more clear, the bifocals were revolutionary in its uses.…

His student Marie Curie discovered that only certain chemical elements gave off these rays of energy and named this radioactivity. Although Becquerel called this radioactivity, Curie later coined the term “radiation”. She’d be the first to work with radioactive materials and also later discover other radioactive elements such as thorium, polonium, and radium. In 1901 within months of studying and experimenting, systems were being made to use x-rays for diagnosis, and within 3 years radiation was used in to treat cancer. Radiation therapy began with radium and with relatively low-voltage diagnostic machines.…

An atom is a basic unit of an element. For thousands of years, people have been questioning about these tiny particles and have came up with many theories based around it. Though many people believe atomic theories started with John Dalton around the late 1700s or early 1800s. This is not true as the atomic theories started sometime during 300 or 400 B.C. with the philosopher, Democritus, being one of the first to come up with a theory about atoms. Democritus’ theory gave the basics of an atom; but his theory was rejected by many during his time as fellow philosophers, Aristotle and Plato, rejected his theory ("The History of the Atom").…
