The atomic theory has revolutionized the field of science. The ideas behind it began in the times of Ancient Greece. From there the ideas were put under trial, proven, disproven, and formed into what we now recognize as the atomic theory. Since the beginning of time, people believed that matter was made from a few fundamental building blocks. In ancient times, these fundamental elements were thought of as water, fire, earth, and air. Around 400 BCE, Democritus and Leucippus developed a theory that explained the composition of everything. They said that all matter was composed of, what they called, atoms. It comes from the Greek word “atomos” which means uncuttable or indivisible. They also believed that each item was made up of its …show more content…
Because Bohr was a physicist, he was also interested in the mathematical model that Max Planck and Albert Einstein had set forth at that time. This model would be used to explain the behavior of electromagnetic energy. After learning that math could be used to help explain behaviors, Bohr realized that math principles could also be applied to Rutherford’s model. Bohr then developed his model of the atom which is often called the Planetary model, mostly because it is very similar to the set up of the planets. This model represents the electrons in orbit around the nucleus. Each of these orbits has a specific number of electrons that correlate to the different energy levels. Using his research and along with other scientists of that time, he proposed a new theory that they called the Quantum theory. This theory said that electrons were not particles or waves, but instead they contained properties of both and neither. In other words, it said that the position of the subatomic particle could only be described as a probability. This probable position would be located along one of the four orbitals. When this theory was drawn into a model which was named the Cloud Model, the electrons of atoms were drawn as a cloud because of the probable, but not exact, position of the subatomic
