I chose to do my internship at Atlanta Police Department CID Unit. This is the investigations unit they follow up with victims after an Atlanta police officer takes the report. An investigation officer deals with about 20 caseloads a day. When the investigator calls the victim, they ask them to explain what happened and they advise how they can proceed with the case, whether that be to look at cameras of the crime or to take a warrant out on the person they found to be guilty. As an intern, I am to answer phones and to advise the investigating officers if they have a phone call, I also take messages for the officers. I have talked to a few about the problems that they face as investigators. They interact with many other agencies to perform their jobs. Their daily routine is to interact with the public weather that is the pubic coming in for an interview, or speaking with them over the phone. They also deal with other Atlanta Police Department officers when they are called out to the scene of a crime. To further investigate, they must get warrants to arrest the criminal that they think is the person who committed the crime, this is when the must interact with a judge that is on call at that given time. This process can take a while as they must communicate over a web camera to the judge. Once they get the warrant, the arresting officer will go get the perpetrator. After they are in custody, they will give a written statement and either the investigator will make a charge or they will let the person go based on whether or not they think they are in fact guilty of that crime. Then that investigator must write a statement advising what they did about the case. Then finally the case becomes closed. If an investigator has no leads on a case, then the case will become inactive. That simply means that the case is no longer being used. An inactive case can become active again if there is found evidence. Atlanta Police Department CID Unit has some problems within the agency. Some of the toughest problems are as follows; the first problem that investigators must go through is getting in contact with the judge. There is supposed to be an on call judge, but it may take that judge time to gather themselves. This makes it tremendously difficult for the investigators.
