Athletes Get Paid

Decent Essays
I've always wondered why entertainers and athletes get paid more than doctors, lawyers, military personnel, etc. I disagree, I think that people who actually make an impact on our country should get a higher salary than people who just entertain us. I think it is unfair for military personnel and doctors to get paid only 30 to 60 thousand a year while actors and actresses get paid 300 thousand a year. I will explain a bit more in the next few paragraphs. The first reason I disagree is because the people that keep us safe and make sure we are healthy are paid very little while actors, singers, etc get a bigger annual salary just to act in a movie or sing one song. Do you ever wonder what the Universities does with all the money they get from selling tickets, jersey/ fan apparel, or signing lucrative contracts? The NCAA and Universities have been treating college athletes poorly. College athletes are not classified as employees but they do all the work an employe would do. College athletes do not get paid, only receive a scholarship to the university, and they receive all of the stresses and hardly any of the benefits of being a college. Athletes deserve to be paid and no longer deserve the disrespect from the bully that is the NCAA All of the money goes straight to the university or the NCAA.…

Have you ever been watching a college sporting event on television and wondered how much the schools actually gain on having these sports? Well the answer to that question really is not that much. In 2010 the average net revenue of division one college football was 3.15 million, but 43 percent of the schools in division one had an average net revenue of 2.87 million in losses (Chua). This is because the schools that play in the bowl games end up spending more to play the football games then what they would make in the end. So after all the money is distributed over the college for paying the coaches and paying for equipment and other things in their sport programs there would be nothing left.…

Over the past few years college athletics have gained tons of popularity and exposure all over America through television, the internet, and social media. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and participating colleges have earned increased revenues because of all the exposure that they have acquired. Even though the NCAA makes millions of dollars from sponsors, commercials, and tournaments, the players who play for the college teams receive no compensation whatsoever for all their hard work and dedication. Imagine being a dedicated worker working long hours far from home every single day, doing college work and studying for exams, bringing in millions of dollars to an employer and not getting paid at all for working hard. That is basically what all college athletes are going through when they work hard everyday in school, go to practice, win games on TV, and do not benefit from the profits that they helped earn for a revenue producing sport at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member institution.…

I think that college athletes should get paid because they are working hard by going to practice and learning new things to make them better and other people besides the college athletes are getting paid. The first reason why I think college athletes should get paid is because when they show up for practice they play hard to get better and win games and I think that If they get paid it will help them pay for the college there going to and make them want to keep playing the sport.…

The topic has been discussed on numerous occasions on whether or not college athletes should be paid for playing sports for major universities. A lot of people feel that they should get paid for the hard work they do, while others such as myself say that they should not be paid. College students should not get paid due to the fact that they are already getting paid on scholarships, it hurts the school, and it doesn’t further their education. The first reason I feel that college athletes shouldn’t be paid is due to the fact that a lot of them are already having their education paid for due to scholarships. Now not every single college athlete gets a full scholarship but a lot of them do.…

As a society, we have witnessed how sports have quickly taken over as a dominant feature of the human culture. College sports as a whole has taken the sports world by storm, there we see the best young talent in the country play against one another as they represent some of the greatest institutions in the nation. As the years go by, it seems like that the best players in the NCAA decide to leave their colleges earlier each year to chase their dreams of playing professional sports. I think this is a cancer to collegiate athletics that the NCAA committee needs to cut out as soon as possible. To these athletes it seems like a great idea to declare for their professional statuses early, however; it is only hurting them in the long run.…

Lizzy Tilton Professor Castor LAN105 12/4/17 Should College Athletes be Paid? “The typical Division I college football player devotes 43.3 hours per week to his sport -- 3.3 more hours than the typical American work week” (Edelman, Marc). Throughout the era of college sports there has been a large and continuous debate about why and whether college athletes should be paid for the services and income they provide their respective colleges.
