One of the hardest choices a family will ever make is to decide whether or not to put an elder of the household into a care facility, seemingly sending them away as most people see it. Though in reality the accommodations are unlike any of the myths, all of the horror stories, every one of the misconceptions that are out there about assisted living are not as they seem. In reality “assisted living [is] a long-term care option that combines housing, support services and health care, as needed”(Argentum, 2016), and when making this decision no one should balk over the choice. This type of health care service is a new idea that was for conceptualized in the late 70’s as an alternative to the nursing home that served those who could no longer live alone, but being that the AL or assisted living homes would more follow the “three H’s: health, housing and hospitality.” (Assisted Living History, 2016) By the mid 1980’s the AL’s were a 24-hour service and provided a multitude of amenities that included but were not limited to, a wide array of community activities designed to help those staying to have a healthy amount of social interaction, as well as a large assortment of different health specialties to accommodate any and all patients. Care facilities are numerous in type, ranging from those in which specialty care is required, to accommodations for the elderly who are looking for a community that puts them in a place where they are with people similar to them. “AL communities are designed for seniors who are no longer able to live on their own safely but do not require the high level of care provided in a nursing home.”(A Place For Mom, 2015) Since1980’s the Assisted Care facilities have been a 24-hour service and have provided a multitude of conveniences such as a wide array of community activities designed to help those staying to have a healthy amount of social interaction, as well as a large assortment of different health specialties to accommodate any and all patients. With staff that is available at all times trained in a large array of specialties incorporating care of dementia and Alzheimer patients, care for all patients is available. If given the opportunity to help make a decision on whether to use an Assisted Living facility before I did this research I would have most likely told you, as most people would, no. Though after seeing what these facilities offer for its residents and how they are catered to meet all the needs of individuals on a case by case, I would recommend this to anyone
