PROMPT #4: Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced. (349 words)

My mother’s constantly failing businesses appeared only to be the start of our financial struggles. My family was evicted from our house and didn’t possess enough money to find a decent place to live. As a freshman, I attempted to escape my family’s financial problems by focusing on socializing with friends. I struggled in understanding basic concepts of precalculus as a result of my preoccupation with my living situation, which led to poor grades. Yet, my friends were thriving in school, boasting fantastic grades and discussing plans for dream colleges. It discouraged me to hear how they were going to become successful doctors or engineers upon graduating from prestigious Ivy

Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you. (315 words)

The concept of animal life is fascinating. What do turtles eat? Why do plants need the sun to survive? How are humans related to chimps? My curiosity only increased as I got older and I decided to take biology class to explore further.
Through biology, I learned about amazing things like DNA, evolution, ecology, and cell biology. To expand upon my knowledge, I participated in interesting activities and experiments. I created different types of biomes using various types of soil, rocks, and all sorts of crawling critters and I even dissected a preserved sheep heart.
At first, I was totally creeped out, considering that the heart used to beat inside a living creature. However, as I studied and examined the different hollow chambers of the heart, feeling the smooth and ice cold texture intrigued me. These activities inspired me to delve deeper into animal biology. I felt a compelling desire to put my knowledge into practice and spent the next couple weeks applying to be an intern at all the veterinary hospitals in Los

I stepped into the AP biology classroom for the second time that day. It was just after school had ended around 4 in the afternoon, and my classmates and I had filed back into the room to start the task of completing the first lab of the year. We had all participated in the regional science fair, so we were all reasonably acquainted with the scientific method, making this lab setting something of relative normality to us. Despite this prior exposure to a lab type setting, this was different. This difference can be contributed mostly to the AP Biology teacher, Mr. Smith.…

When I look at the environment, I see a living organism. Like any organism, it responds to stimuli, positively and negatively. Currently, as the human population grows, it appears that the environment is becoming sick, needing to be healed. The best way to do that is by caring for it like a doctor cares for their patient, or in this case, an ecologist for the environment. Growing up in a family of healthcare providers, I was exposed to the nitty gritty of what actually happens in a hospital or clinic, and quite frankly, it has interested me.…

Unaware of our ethnicities, we are brought together to strive for excellence, obtain a better life than our parents, and to make a difference in this world. As the years pass by, one begins to acknowledge the diversity we are surrounded with in school and the upbringing most had to face to one day allow us to achieve the goals set to our standards. At a juvenile age, I was educated with the tools required to succeed towards acquiring a job suited to meet my hobbies and personality; which is obtaining a baccalaureate degree. I am interested in pursuing Animal Science because animals have always been a big part of my life; I grew up with my grandfather, who had a farm away from home that he tended to every day. Once a week, when I tagged along, he would wake me at 8am sharp and we would head to the farm in his truck. My primary job was to help look after the animals; I cleaned the chicken coops, fed the pigs, brought the cows hay. This generated my passion for animals; the more I cared for them, the more they seemed to trust me, which was a gratifying feeling.…
