Assignment 1 The Great Gatsby

Assignment 1.1: Three things I learned from the pre-reading are that Fitzgerald was an alcoholic, that the people in this book want to get rich quick, and that Gatsby does not accept the process of time.
Assignment 1.2: Nick’s father advised him not to criticize anyone because all people did not have the advantages he had. We learn that Nick attended Yale and that his family is wealthy. He moves to West Egg which is nice but not quite as high class as East Egg. Nick’s neighbor, Gatsby, is a mysterious man who is extremely wealthy.
Assignment 2.1: The people who went to the party were Tom, Myrtle, Nick, the Mckees, and Catherine (Myrtle’s sister). Myrtle is Tom’s mistress and her sister Catherine seems to approve of their affair. Mr. Mckee

Nick asks if Daisy wants to see Gatsby but Jordan said that she is not supposed to know about the arrangement.
Assignment 5.2: The rain symbolizes the awkwardness and lack of conversation between Daisy and Gatsby. The sunshine represents the emotions after Gatsby and Daisy talk while Nick is outside.
Assignment 5.3: If Nick had been a Christian I think he would have seen the whole situation as morally corrupt. He should have confronted Tom about his adultery with Myrtle. He should have refused Gatsby’s request and told him that it would be wrong to break up a family by having an affair with Daisy. Daisy made a commitment to Tom and it would be wrong to break that unity.
Assignment 6.1: James Gatz grew up poor. He “invented” himself when he was seventeen. He rowed out to Dan Cody’s yacht to tell him about the wind that was coming his way. He spent five years with Dan Cody who became his closest friend. Gatsby was put into Dan Cody’s will but did not receive the money because Cody’s mistress kept it all.
Assignment 6.2: Nick tells Gatsby that he cannot repeat the past, meaning that the type of relationship Gatsby and Daisy had years ago will not be the same
