Reflective insight: The goal of this assessment was to pre assess the student for the skills identifying literary elements and techniques in short stories. I wanted the students to first make sure they understood the vocabulary to understand within the short story. This assessment will help me understand the students starting point for this unit and will help assist me with future lesson planning.
**Kahoot is an online assessment format so I was unable to get a picture of the students work, although I do have a copy for the teacher’s version**
The assessment tool: As a formal assessment, the students were to create a short story with the criteria of including the 5 literary elements: plot, character, conflict, theme, and setting. The students will be given examples of short stories the whole week to practice and see visual examples. With this assignment the students were given a rubric and checklist to check their work and produce the best work. The test comprised of questions that dealt with all the literary elements, how short stories make the elements the foundation of the story, and how techniques are used to make the story more elaborate. The students were asked to also write a short story that encompassed all of these aspects and was scaled on a rubric similar to the short story assignment. Each question was worth 2-20 points. The quiz also contained multiple-choice, matching, fill in the blank, and 1 essay.
Implications of Results: The students did quite well on this test. W received a 42/50, M received a 36/50, and J received a 45/50. The students were able to complete all the questions. Due to the low score of M, he was not feeling well, I really feel that if he was feeling a little better he would have done better.
