It is awarded to students who have satisfactorily completed Years 11 and 12 at secondary school (Boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au 2014).
As defined by the Board of Studies, assessment is “is the process of gathering information and making judgements about student achievement for a variety of purposes” (Boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au 2014). The HSC RE Syllabus outlines its reasons for assessment to be:
• assisting student learning
• evaluating and improving teaching and learning programs
• providing evidence of satisfactory achievement and completion in the Preliminary course
• providing the Higher School Certificate results.
