First, I'd like to comment about the loophole. Bill Troxelll, I'm not sure exactly which state you live in but if you don't live in California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oregon and Rhode Island then you can LEGALLY sell your privately owned firearm to another private citizen WITHOUT needing that person to pass a background check. Of course, it should be noted that if that person is a felon and you know that, you'd be guilty of committing a crime known as a "straw purchase" (a felony).

Hunter, you are certainly a very well educated person especially pertaining to history. Having said that, you know and understand that societies (dynasties, empires, republics etc) do not last forever and eventually fall apart. With this in mind, a rifle would certainly be necessary (with an understanding of how it works).
Again, drawing from my military experience, I completely understand what happens to a society when rule of law has broken or fallen apart. When rule of law fell apart in Baghdad (2003), we saw mobs of Suni "gangs" murder, rape and damn near start a small genocide of other groups who had no way of defending themselves.
