Aspirin is produced from the reaction of Salicylic Acid and Acetic Anhydride. Aspririn is a analgesic and antipyretic. The purpose of this experiment is to produce aspirin and analyzing it for yield. Twenty grams of salicylic acid, molecular weight 138.1g/mol, 5.0 mL of acetic anhydride, molecular weight 102.1g/mol and density 1.08g/mL, and 5 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid were mixed in a 125mL flask. The mixture was heated in a 70°C hot water bath then taken out to cool to room temperature. Once the formation of crystals was complete 50mL of water was added and pured over a Buchner funnel for vacuum filtration. The crystals were rinsed with cold water and stayed on the vacuum for 5-10 minutes.The crystals were removed and weighed. The esterification process yielded 2.51g. The percent yield was 95.8%. Other factors that contributed to less than 100% yield is the fact that aspirin is slightly water soluble. More product could have possibly been maintained if less water was used.
Introduction
The purpose of this experiment is to produce aspirin and analyzing it for yield. Chemical reactions are all atoms, ions and molecules in constant motion and are constantly bumping into each other. For a chemical reaction to happen, three conditions must be met. First, bumping particles must be moving fast enough. Second, the bumping particles must have sufficient energy to react. Third, the bumping particles must be positioned toward each other in the proper arrangement. When those three are met, a reaction rate can be measured by the occurrence of impacts of those particles. Heat increases the moving speed of particles, increases the number and fierceness of impacts.
