More than 2,000 years ago, a ruler named Asoka led the Mauryan Empire. Around this time period, Asoka was making many different decisions and basing his actions off of his personality and thoughts circa that time period. Asoka was a enlightened ruler because, he believed that everyone deserved forgiveness, he rejected the path of violence, and Asoka stopped himself from influencing different wars with other countries.

Asoka felt great sadness for all of the lives that were lost in the war against the Kalingans. So, he went on a pilgrimage seeking a guru (which is a teacher). While he was seeking the teacher by the riverbank he met a Buddhist monk, the monk told him to sit beneath the Bodhi tree where the Buddha had found enlightenment.
In addition, Asoka decided to stop influencing wars against countires, Asoka wanted to end all wars because of the destruction he had created. He influenced the war against thd Kalingans to try and please his Empire. Asoka wanted everyone in his empire to be happy and have oppertunites to live a good life. After the war against the Kalingans he realized that he achieved everything that he and his empire wanted. Asoka wanted to end the pain that he was continuing to cause everyone in Kalinga and the people that were already suffering prior to the war.
Many have taken into account that Asoka caused more than 200,000 deaths but, he did it all for the well being of his people. Asoka loved his people and wanted to ensure that they were provided with every oppertunity to rise. However I do not agree with his antics, but I can understand the love he had for his empire.
