Character Analysis – Ashitaka
Ashitaka is a protagonist in the movie Princess Mononoke. Ashitaka is very brave and extremely selfless. At the beginning of the film see him fight a demon to protect his family and in turn of this sacrifice Ashitaka is cursed. Throughout the film you see Ashitaka’s selfless heart by the way he tries to do what is best for not only the people of iron town but also what is best for the forest. Because he is trying to do what is best for everyone, it is unclear whose side Ashitaka is on. I find this very interesting for a character because at times the audience may think that Ashitaka is going to choose humans over the forest, it really leaves the audience on edge wondering what this character will do next.

The aspect of hate is strongly touched on in Princess Mononoke “Look, everyone! This is what hatred looks like! This is what it does when it catches hold of you! It's eating me alive, and very soon it will kill me!” This is a quote said by Ashitaka, the quote sounds like Ashitaka is saying that hate is a curse. One can witness plastic toys, paper cut outs that interestingly demonstrate the concept of death. There are displays of casket, skull and skeleton candies. This also personifies the creative thinking and innovative skills of the Mexican people. It shows how they can transform the hideous concept of death into something colourful.
