Ash Lawn-Highland Architecture Analysis

Improved Essays
Ash Lawn-Highland presents a typical Colonial, Georgian style façade that presents a red brick foundation, which runs along the structure’s base turning into fieldstone along the west wing. Attached to a stone stylobate, a single brick step runs half the length of the porch. Adjoining the stylobate are two wooden plinths, which support Tuscan columns. The Tuscan columns sustain the full weight of the portico’s pediment. Full-length wooden floorboards make up the remaining area of the porch, which flanks the stylobate. The portico’s interior consists of a molded trim doorframe that contains a green painted half glass and one-panel wooden door.
The three windows of Ash Lawn-Highland’s façade are six-over-six double-hung sash windows assembled upon wooden-clad walls. The window’s interior frames consist of hand-blown glass and molded trim. On each side of the double-sash windows, are green painted louvered wooden shutters. Flanking the pediment on the west wing of the structure are decorative verge boards with a metal gutter that runs the full length of the building. The structure’s shingles have two distinct configurations that include a styled pattern format on the structure’s original portion and a rectangular style format on the west wing addition. The side of the structure consists of white paneled clapboard and two nine-over-nine double-hung sash windows. Like the windows on the structure’s façade, the two windows positioned on the side include molded trim and hand-blown glass, with green wooden louvered shutters flanking both sides of the window. Attached to the side is a pediment with fascia moldings on its exterior and interior sides, which stems from the back porch of the structure’s façade. Along the roof’s sides is a frieze, which connects to a fascia molding that runs the length of the

There are some minor faults in the exterior of the building, however. In the courtyard of the North façade, the stone foundation is being stained green by the surrounding foliage. There is also moss growing on several stones on the East side of the Main entrance. On the east façade of Memorial Antechapel there is some chipping in the stone under the windows. It appears as though repairs have been opposite…

Except for the dull roar of speeding cars on the highway beside the entrance, and the occasional, distant chirpings of birds, the scene was filled with a solemn quietude. As I walked further inside, vast fields of grass continued before me, segmented in an organized matter by the paved roads with rows of aligned trees. Some had gravestones, buried into the ground in neat lines, each facing in a north-south orientation, while others did not. Approaching what seemed to be a mere grassfield, I noticed the endless rows of…

Pages 305-307 → Film The day was fading into a soft sun-shot haze, pricked here and there by a yellow electric light, and passers were rare in the little square into which they had turned. Dallas stopped again, and looked up. "It must be here," he said, slipping his arm through his father 's with a movement from which Archer 's shyness did not shrink; and they stood together looking up at the house. It was a modern building, without distinctive character, but many-windowed, and pleasantly balconied up its wide cream-coloured front. On one of the upper balconies, which hung well above the rounded tops of the horse-chestnuts in the square, the awnings were still lowered, as though the sun had just left it.…

The statehouse is built in the Greek Revival style which is a design type based on the buildings of Ancient Greece. This was popular in the US from 1820 through the early 1860s. It’s a masonry building consisting of Columbus limestone on the exterior which was taken from a quarry on the banks of the Scioto River. I chose to describe the architectural elements of the back side of the statehouse. Looking at the portico at the center of the building, the top contains the pediment space.…

Medieval Values and Architecture When taking a more in-depth look at Medieval values and their manifestation in physical buildings in their towns, there is a connection that is immediately evident. These manifestations go to show the deeper meaning of these buildings and windows, and the thought that the designer put into them. First, is the layout of medieval churches. These churches were a large part of the lives of Medieval people, serving as a center for religious services, funerals, weddings, as well as education.…

Queen's house, designed by architect Inigo Jones was the first pure classical building in Britain and brought a revolution into the architectural scene. Inigo Jones was inspired by his travels in Italy and especially his second visit in 1613 where he visited major cities and buildings and compared theory with practice, from then on his style of architecture took a new form. I want to explore the originality of Queen's house, how much of the design came from Inigo Jones the architect and how much came from Inigo Jones the posthumous sponsor of Palladianism, as he is often referred to. Andrea Palladio is often seen as the main inspiration to building Queen's house and Jones took his treaties 'I quattro libri dell'architettura' as an architectural…
