Banksy was a graffiti artist in the early 1990’s characterized by striking images, often combined with slogans. Occasionally creating his art freehand, Bansky’s most common form of street art are stencils. These are often multi-layered stencils combined with other media sources, such as spray-paint. He furthermore includes street signs and other objects to convey his message. A great deal of Banksy’s work centres on images of rats. These creatures serve as a symbol for the underprivileged urban citizens. Banksy often portrays the rats breaking laws, being mischievous, or with negative attitudes. Banksy describes his use of rats in his book Wall and Piece, “They exist without permission. They are hated, hunted and persecuted. They live in quiet desperation amongst the filth. Yet they are capable of bringing entire civilizations to their knees.” For example Figures 12, 13, 14. Similar to the rats, a number of Banksy painting feature apes. They represent the impoverished and oppressed urban citizens, for example, Figure 21. Calling for future change, it highlights the issues with the current urban environment begging for change. These contrasting images suggest that negative aspects of society and have corrupted traditional symbols of hope.
