Article Review: Vanity Fair Called Deadly Medicine

I was assigned to read an article from Vanity Fair called Deadly Medicine. In this article, I learned the number of foreign clinical trials that are done overseas are unbelievable. You would think that if they are making drugs for Americans then they would be doing testing and trials in America. Well that’s not the case. They run trails in countries that are poorer, because it is cheaper for them and they can save and make more money. t of these places can include Bangladesh, The Russian Federation, Thailand, Ukraine, and Peru just to name a few. In these places, the rules and regulations are less strict. They can basically do as they please, because the F.D.A does not monitor them as they should. It is said in the article that the F.D.A only visited only about 45 out of 6,485 trials that were being conducted out of the country. That sounds like they are not doing their job. clinical-trails just calls it “an adverse event”. A specific case when children took place in a trail to test a new vaccine called synflorix, made by GlaxoSmithKline. This drug was supposed to prevent ear infections and pneumonia. It is said over the course of the study 14 infants that participated died. The parents had signed their children up without knowing that it was an experiment, they only received 350 dollars per child. I could not imagine my child dying because of an experiment and only receiving 350 dollars. It might be the reason they choose to have the trails overseas, where people don’t fully understand. If that would have happened in the United States they would have gotten into a lot of trouble or the drug probably would not have been approved in the first
