In the Arthurian legend, one of many famous love triangles is the one between King Uther, Igraine (Duchess of Cornwall), and Gorlois (Duke of Cornwall). In this story, Uther has Merlin cast a spell to deceive Igraine and make her think he is Gorlois. In order to completely fool Igraine, he needed to kill Gorlois. Of course, Merlin will only do this under one condition: that he is given Uther and Igraine’s first born child. “The king swore on the gospel that would do so, and Merlin continued: ‘Tonight you shall appear before Igraine at Tintagel in the likeness of her husband, the duke…’”(Anthology 1064). Uther agrees to Merlin’s terms and thus kills Gorlois. He then goes to Igraine disguised as Gorlois and gets Igraine pregnant. Later, Uther tells Igraine that he is not Gorlois and he explains to Igraine what went down between the two. After finding out that Uther was Gorlois, Igraine still gives birth to Uther’s child and is forced to give it up to Merlin because of Uther’s deal. Even after being fooled by Uther, Igraine eventually learns to love Uther. With the death of Gorlois, the tragedies in the love triangles have just begun. The next love triangle is between King Mark, Iseult, and Tristan, however, this love triangle is not as popular as Uther or Arthur’s. In this triangle, Mark, King of Cornwall, sends Tristan, his nephew, to Ireland to battle the Irish knight, Morholt.

Geoffrey Chaucer and Marie de France have strikingly similar themes within the Breton Lai’s they have produced within their works. A Breton Lai is a narrative form of English and French Medieval literature that usually consist of tales of Courtly love, Chivalry, and often using supernatural elements within the story as well. Both Chaucer’s work of The Wife of Bath’s tale and Breton Lais produced by Marie de France such as Bisclavret and Lanval incorporate all of these elements and they will be examined and compared in this response. The Earliest Breton Lai’s were written by Marie de France and although we have no way of knowing whether or not Chaucer read Marie de France’s works, we can clearly see a connection between the two authors as shown in The Wife Of Bath’s Tale.…

The moral of “Lanval” by Marie de France seems to be a theme of loyalty and justice from the time Lanval remains loyal to Queen Semiramis and also to his host King Arthur. Lanval also receives justice for his loyalty when his queen rides into town to save him from death, and she informs King Arthur that Queen Guinevere was in the wrong about Lanval making advances toward her and judging him in regard to his desire for men by stating, “…you should know that the queen was in the wrong. He never made advances to her.” (Lanval, pg. 309, line 619-621).…

Reinforcing this connection, Cedric does not return when he travels with the Triwizard Cup and Galahad also does not return when he ascends with the Holy Grail. Krum is most closely representative of Perceval who, on multiple occasions, fails in his attempt to find the Holy Grail because he makes decisions that prove he is not as pure of heart as Galahad. In the second task, while Harry stays to help Fleur’s sister, Krum arrives and departs in the name of succeeding in his quest, aligning him with Percival, who made the mistake of not helping an injured fisherman in The Quest for the Holy Grail. The stories of knights from Arthur’s round table of lore have endured hundreds of years, demonstrating the valor and chivalry of these men. The Lai of Lanval scribed by Marie de France tells such a story, documenting the knight’s honor and faithfulness. The tale also weaves in a sense of reward for loyalty and humbleness, as Lanval is rewarded for his actions by an other worldly source. Lanval of Arthur’s knights is respected in his community but not so by his peers. It is not entirely clear why this is but there is mention that he is of royal blood which could be a factor.…

Loyalty Loyalty is the most common theme that Beowulf, Lanval, Sir Gawain & the Green Knight, and Chaucer share. For example, loyalty to their kingdom, king, love, or themselves. Being loyal could be selflessness, protection, and allegiance. Characters within these stories, not just the main ones, do something in the stories that show these qualities. Beowulf shows selflessness when he decides to go to Hrothgar to help him out with his Grendel situation.…

This declaration was one without mercy, but to Arthur it seemed to be the best action to take as it ensured the destruction of his potentially mortal enemy. Morgause in her seduction not only shamed Arthur but also gave rise to his ultimate destruction. What also added to Arthur’s eventual destruction was the affair between Guinevere and Lancelot. Professor Lis Marxen also describes how their relationship led to the ruin of Arthur, “Guinevere becomes the ultimate threat to Camelot and as a major cause of its downfall, as she is unable to produce an heir and undermines the stability of the realm by her continuous obsession with…

Without a doubt, Perceval knew Arthur would never set Guinevere aside. While Perceval hadn’t been present at the king and queens nuptials (he’d not been a knight yet), Arthur always spoke about how his marriage to Guinevere was a love match, which was something new and different. Few royals married for love – most wed to advance their status or secure alliances with other kingdoms. But not Arthur. “My love for Guinevere makes me a better man and a better ruler,” he insisted now and back on the way of his wedding.…
