Last summer, I participated in a functional anatomy course which allowed me to acquire a better understanding of the human muscular system. This learning was facilitated by the dissection of a cadaver and participation in collaborative groups projects. Through this experience, I acquired new skills and refined other proficiencies necessary to be a good fit for the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (DPT) at Pacific University.

Firstly, I grew in my ability to absorb large amounts of information, analyze it, and draw conclusions. This course required that I memorize the origin and insertion of human muscles along with their actions and nerve innervations. Using this information, I was asked to discern similarities and differences between muscle groups and describe situations in which muscles functioned as synergist or antagonist. My group was assigned to expose the muscles, blood vessels, and nerves of a cadaver and to open the knee joint for knee arthroplasty. We were also required to prepare a collaborative presentation on the joint structure and function of the knee. Since I am a very driven person when it comes to achieving my academic goals, I found it difficult at first to work with group members who were less motivated. Knowing, however, that the success of my group was depended on the peak performance of each team member, I quickly focused my thoughts on bringing the group together as a cohesive team. I learned to arrange group meetings to accommodate the schedules of others, to discern the strengths of others when assigning tasks, and to seek input from team when planning and problem solving. Additionally, I learned to not only acknowledge feedback from others, but also to actively seek it. Through peer feedback, I was able to improve my portion of our presentation on knee function as well as refine my oral presentation

Everything from the outer layer of the skin to the core of the bone is necessary for the joint to articulate properly. The most important function of the skin at the knee joint is to provide the first line of defense from the external environment (4). It is also interesting to note that the skin around the knee…
