Read the book Shape by Shape by Suse MacDonald making sure that every student is able to see the pictures.
2. When the book is over, ask the students, “Were there any shapes that we did not mention earlier?” (if so, put the shape on the board)
3. Have the students go back to their tables.
4. Explain to the students that they are going to create their own picture using patterns and shapes.
5. Show the students my example.
6. Point out the different shapes, patterns, and anything thing else that might give them ideas for their picture.
7. Tell the students that they need to use a pencil to create their picture and outline it in marker, but that they can color and/or paint any color they want as well as create anything in their own picture. (please stress that their picture should include shapes/patterns)
• Closure
1. Pass out drawing paper. (other materials will already be out for students to use)
2. Have the students create their artwork.
3. When they are done, have them get with a partner and tell what shapes/patterns they used in their pictures.

I will be certain that I am clear and specific when I am asking them questions so I will not confuse them. I will work with these student(s) in smaller groups if they need extra help understanding the lesson. I will provide an example of a picture of what they are supposed to be creating so that they have something that they can look at as a reference. I will also allow them enough time to complete the lesson and emphasize that they can work at their own pace.

Create a “Classroom Book Bag” using a baggie of foam shapes (all different sizes, shapes, and colors), drawing paper, a pencil, crayons, and parent directions. Tell the parents that in Creative Arts we are working on shapes and patterns. Have the students create shapes using the foam shapes and draw a picture of what they created. Please let them know that since this is creative, that this means they can create both real and imaginary shapes.
