The painting “The Old Guitarist” by Pablo Picasso is a masterpiece that gives great insight into the artist’s troubled life. Picasso used oil on canvas, and painted this work of art in 1903 while working in Barcelona. “The Old Guitarist” was one of Picasso’s most prominent pieces of his “Blue Period”, which lasted from 1901-1904, and was caused by the death of his good friend, Carlos Casagemas. In this “Blue Period”, Picasso’s paintings featured flat expanses of blues, and often-showed figures in pain or sorrow. In “The Old Guitarist”, there is an old, poor, blind man sitting on the streets of Barcelona playing his guitar. The man looks incredibly sickly, and appears to be just clinging to life. The painting as a whole, gives a good idea of how Picasso felt towards the world because, “the image reflects the struggling twenty-two-year-old Picasso’s sympathy for the plight of the downtrodden; he knew what it was like to be poor, having been nearly penniless during all of 1902” (The Old Guitarist, 1903 by Pablo Picasso). Along with the time period, and image of the guitarist, there are other elements of this work of art that stand out as well.

This is because I look past the appearance of the man, or the colors that Picasso uses. To me, those are just elements of the bigger picture, which I think, are that there is always hope. The guitar gives me this sense of hope because against all odds, this man is still able to play his guitar. The fact that he is blind did not stop him. The fact that he is poor, and lost everything did not stop him. So, this makes me think that no matter what the situation is that people find themselves in, there is always a way out of the darkness and into the

This overt politicization of his work was produced in 1915 during the Mexican Revolution and while considered vulgar in expression, beautifully exhibits what some have called Rivera’s Mexican texture. “Zapatista Landscape” represents the divide that Picasso and Braque as academicians showcased in their own cubist's expansion. It is Rivera reaching out to…

Cortes explained, “It was exciting to see abstract art, surrealism, conceptual art, and photorealism all collaged into a minimalist setting. We included only what was necessary while attempting something brand new for all of us.” After showing me a picture of the finished painting, I was impressed to see that the panoramic background view of the Salinas fields were just as detailed as the slightly transparent head and shoulders of a smiling Cesar…

The color is able to work well with the emotions captured, because turquoise (a shade of blue), is known to represent sadness and depression. This idea can be found in the article Art Emanates from Pain and Sadness: Picasso's Blue Period, where it explained how, “The monochromatic use of blue was fairly standard in symbolist painting, often related to representations of hopelessness”, which showed how the photographer planned to have his image associated with such depressing emotions. The altered image on the cover of the magazine uses a lighter background, and swaps the turquoise for grey. This alteration of the photo for the cover was done in order for the audience to focus more on the piercing stare and make it pop with the neutral gray, as opposed to having it be somewhat overshadowed by the turquoise of the…

In reading the two assigned poems and short stories, there were points in which I struggled and felt I had a fair understanding of the writings. In the first poem, “The Guitarist Tunes Up”, I didn’t have much trouble in my annotations, therefore I was able to make connections between different diction and metaphors fairly easily. In determining the speaker of the poem I struggled slightly because when I was reading the poem I felt like the speaker should also have been the guitarist as there was a strong sense of familiarity between the speaker and the bond that a guitarist shares with their guitar. What led me to believe otherwise was the third person narrative throughout the poem which would suggest that this poem was written from an observer’s…

The detail work is somewhat hard to understand but its clear to see that the panting is based on chaos, pain, and death. Now a days Guernica is seen as a icon as the first truly modern history painting. Guernica is now held in the capital of Spain, Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid. Picasso didn’t want his painting in his hometown because of everything hat was going on yet, but that all changed when everything got back on tracked and when that happen it was 1973 the year Picasso had died. This painting is a ambiguous symbolic meaning which has so many different monumental measurements with this…
