Arreola Satire

Decent Essays
I think Arreola was making a satire of the absurdity of human life. My interpretation of the story is how people board the train of life with no direction and hope to meet their destination, while that not be what happens most times. At the beginning of the story, the switchman tells the stranger to stay at the inn where other passengers waiting for a train are staying but he refuses. The inn symbolizes our fears that are holding us back from living. Secondly, the man thinks because he has a ticket that he will arrive at his destination-T. This represents people who receive an opportunity feel like they will be successful but the switchman reminds the man of the journey to the destination. This signifies the decisions that he will make to be

Satire is an important element in writing. It’s a way for writers to take a step back and comment on something; to show how ridiculous it is without just flat out saying it. Satire is usually used as a fun way of pointing out the faults in society and current events. The Other Paris by Mavis Gallant was written in 1956, barely a decade after World War 2 finished, the world was rebuilding and marriage was seen as a safe option, a way to move forward and start a life together. The main character of The Other Paris, Carol thinks of marriage as a security blanket rather than a lifelong commitment to the one you love, she accepts a proposal from a man named Howard, a man she hadn’t even known for three weeks…simply because she assumes that nobody…

    Mercy Warren Satire

Mercy Otis Warren was not a promoter of women’s suffrage, nor was she a contemporary feminist. She was, however, an advocate of women’s participation in public politics. Warren had an independent mind and heart and the Revolution questioned the standard rules of political freedom for women at the time, persuading the once-obedient lady to add her own thoughts about the War. Warren was the typical calm, submissive Puritan wife—until the War began. She was willing to give up her life to God, but there were two things that she could not and would not let go of: education and politics (which was quite odd for a woman during the 17th Century).…

    Atomic Cafe Satire

The film "The Atomic Cafe" depicts life in the atomic age using footage of the atomic bombs, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Cold War. With the buildup of nuclear arms, the biggest issue the American people were facing at the time was nuclear warfare. During the 50's and 60's, the government used safety guidelines like "duck and cover" to assure the American people that a casual, atomic attack was simply nothing to worry about. This film, with the use of satire, poked holes in the government's propaganda. With the recent events happening since Trump's presidency, "The Atomic Cafe" is a reminder of how the atomic age might make another appearance.…

    Satire In Brave New World

Samuel L. Jackson once said, “We’ve come a long way in our thinking, but also in our moral decay.” This quote holds true today as society stays rapidly changing and people become more and more desensitized to the horrors of the world. The line between right and wrong fades and turns to a larger gray area, and many things that happen in society today make us question how we, as a collective people, ended up where we are and how we acquired the customs we have today. Aldous Huxley, in his novel Brave New World, uses a great deal of satire and exaggeration to express his concerns for the society he was born into and bring attention to the problems of moral decay, drug dependency, and brainwashing, among other things, in the world.…

This signifies the difficulty society has created for individuals to accomplish and pursue personal desires. The tangled wires are symbolic of the emotional burden the expectations of society creates for individuals.…
