The United States is one of several countries that celebrate an annual Armed Forces Day. President Harry S. Truman was instrumental in establishing this American holiday as a way to thank the military and their families for their service. It was created on August 31st, 1949 and was first observed on May 20th, 1950. Although Armed Forces Day was created to replace the days already celebrated by the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and the Marine Corp, those branches of the military still observe their own specific days in addition to Armed Forces Day.
