Arizona State University Music Concert Report

On April 8, I went to the Back to the Future Brentano String Quartet in Arizona State University (ASU). It really surprised me because it wasn’t like any of the classical music concerts I had ever seen before. It was a medium sized venue and very casual. There was no program handed out but the name, composer and type of piece it was, projected on the screen behind the musicians. The theme of the concert was back to the future. It focused on the 20th century chamber music and was very contemporary. The ensemble for the men was simple, black tuxedo but the women wore something more modern, black pants and a multicolored shirt. It was a very inspiring concert. The first piece was the String Quartet No.3, Opus 94. It was by Benjamin Britter (1913-1976). The solos were very calm and the burlesque was very fast. I was surprised when they started because there were many jerky movements and the performers swayed very fast and sharp. The harmony and rhythm was very alluring. In the …show more content…
The piece was an andante adagio moderato Allegro. In the beginning there were many solos and it came on very fast and seemed “angry” because the pitches and speed were always changing and there was never the same rhythm. There were the constant stops like the first piece but the endings before the pauses were huge and dramatic. There was many more head and rough body movements but it fit well in with the piece. Despite all of the striking music, the performers were always in sync. The piece had many sharp stops and well- emphasized notes. I was watching the performers closely and noticed that one music page went on for what seems to be forever because the entire piece was 30 minutes and there were only a few pages. This piece made me feel like i'm in the future because all of the different types of music in one piece. This piece took me into a completely different world with it’s beautiful

The piece went from a slow tempo to a gradual fast tempo in which it seemed like the performers were expressing themselves along the piece. It was as if they expressing themselves with the dynamic of the piece. The second part was the orchestra in which the conductor guided the performers in how they played. Every day, I try to listen to a new piece of music. Whether it be a string group, unaccompanied choir, or even a percussion consort, I believe that by doing this, so much can be learned from just listening. About the mid-month of July, I came across this piece of music. I thought it was extremely fun and quirky at the same time! I had continued to listen to it, read some background information on the piece, and do a small amount of study on the work.…

It was not fast but it was vivace and adagio. From the way i heard it, i will say that it represents a major key , which puts an individual in a happy and relaxed mood. The piece reminds me of like sometime in the spring with birds chirping and flowers blooming. In this piece, is more likely to be played at a dance ball.…

It is great that we are showing music through social media to help people broaden their look on music. This symphony seemed like they were made to play with each other. The made very few mistakes and you could actually feel something about the music. The musicians made you feel as passionate as them about the music. At the beginning I got excited for the concert because of all the media they show on the ceiling and walls.…

Walking into the auditorium, I immediately noticed that the atmosphere of the concert was completely different from that of the classical concert I attended weeks earlier. To begin with, it seemed like there was much more of an audience. Everyone seemed excited for the concert to start. As for myself, I was also excited because, on the very front of the program, it said that there was a guest artist that was going to perform with the ensemble. The performers wore more of a business casual look, some were a little more dressed up than others, but overall they looked very well dressed.…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…

At the concert, I was a perspective listener. The perspective listener is a combination of all of the listener types. A perspective listener enjoys the sound of the music but is also critically aware of how it makes them feel and why and it also makes associations with the music whether it being from a feeling or a memory. Going to the concert I was listening with great concentration, trying to hear every aspect of the piece.…

The emotions expressed by not only the music but by how the musicians looked while playing these pieces made me believe that this show meant a lot to them because they would sway to the music when they weren’t playing. It had my emotions spiral out of control because some of the music was happy then it turned sad in an instance, then it would go right back to something whimsical. It’s not the typical kind of music that I would listen to daily but I am happy that I got to attend this event and hear something that I wouldn’t normally.…

The instruments are all moving quickly and playing different and conflicting parts all over one another, which creates an interesting and energetic sound. I liked having this energetic and lively section towards the end of the piece. It created anticipation and excitement while listening, while also revisiting some of the initial musical sections from the first movement. I thought that the revisiting of initial musical pieces tied the whole thing together, by showing the connection through the first and last movements. I thought it was interesting that this movement ended with a downbeat, as it initially started with an…

On Thursday, September 29th at 7:30pm I attended the LU Symphony Orchestra Concert in Towns Auditorium. Prior to the concert beginning, I noticed a wide variety of instruments on the stage. There were some instruments that I did not know the name of but for the most part, I knew a large majority of the string, woodwind and brass instruments presented. The last time that I went to a symphony was when I was in elementary school, so attending an orchestral concert in college was a much different experience. I was fascinated by the diversity of instruments.…

When the three performers came out they were playing the Cello and the Piano. There was also an older lady there that was singing what sounded like opera singing. All of the individuals that were performing were teachers in at this campus. I was very surprised that we have this much talent at our music department from the teachers. With the first act they performed songs called Mercy, Stones, Shelter, and The Lacemaker.…
