Arguments Against School Vouchers

The political spectrum shows where political ideals fall in line amongst each other. From left to right the spectrum reads as follows: radical, liberal, moderate, conservative, reactionary. These labels each have a meaning in the way they reflect ideas about the government, especially its role in the economy and society. The left side of the spectrum (radical and liberal) supports more government involvement economically but less government involvement socially. To the right, conservatives and reactionaries prefer less government involvement in the economy and more government involvement in social issues. Personally I fall as a liberal on the spectrum, both economically and socially. I lean left by being against school vouchers, and in …show more content…
The concept of school choice is that the government gives vouchers to families wanting to send their children to private schools. The argument in favor of this says that it is good because parents are given the right to choose the school their child attends and supposedly it makes public schools better. In reality school vouchers have proven to be harmful to public schools by giving public funds to private schools when the real need for funding is at public institutions where there are more students to help on a decreasing budget. Studies have shown similar student satisfaction ratings in voucher schools and public schools. Additionally, as reported by the University of Pennsylvania, “similar studies of the longest running school voucher program in the country in Milwaukee actually found that public school students outperformed voucher students at every grade level on the statewide reading and math tests” (UPenn.org). Overall, school voucher programs are …show more content…
As a social liberal, I believe in the freedom of choice. The right to choose is part of American liberty. The 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade ruled that abortion is constitutionally legal but since then anti-choice politicians have been putting laws in place that are “trying to outlaw abortion altogether, shutting down clinics, restricting access based on income level and dictating which medical procedures are available” (ProChoiceAmerica.org). This unfairness is a violation of the basic right of women to decide when and with whom to start a family. Endangering the right to abortion is threatening the equality of women. I believe in reproductive freedom for all women in the United States. The fight for equality and autonomy began with Roe v. Wade and will not be

The topic of abortion has always been a controversial issue. There are, and will always be, many different views concerning the ethical acceptability, social stigma, and morality of abortion. While there had already been attempts to properly emphasize women’s civil rights in society, it wasn’t until the emergence of a case like Roe v. Wade that brought to the public eye the legal issue of a woman’s right to receive an abortion, as well as her rights as a person and citizen. Even though this case was based more on the legality and right to privacy and personal freedoms, the legal issues surrounding a woman’s right to abortion was the true start of the women’s liberation movement. The Supreme Court’s decision of Roe v. Wade to legalize abortion…

Abortion is one of those topics you don’t just bring up at the dinner table. Abortion shouldn’t be done at free will. There should be boundaries set into place when dealing with this issue. If someone is dying while carrying the child they should have the option to abort. If a person was forced to have sex, without consent, and they got pregnant, they should be allowed to abort the baby if they choose too.…

It has become an issue that people feel very strongly for or against and has even indirectly nearly caused a government shut down in recent months (Hitchner). Not only does it affect women, but also the potential fathers and their family members. It doesn’t just affect one person and so it becomes a national, heated issue, and not just any simple issue, but one that is very complex and complicated. The Far left side view of abortion is: The woman has the right to decide what she does with her body. A fetus is not a human life. The government should have funds to pay for abortions for the women who can’t afford to have one. Having an abortion is a personal choice of a woman and her body, the government must protect the right for a woman to have a choice. Women have the right to have an affordable, safe and legal abortion.…

These words get tossed to those who are towards the movement of pro-choice and not “pro-life”. Abortion is a topic that has been discussed time and time again, but rightfully so. Presidential candidates are often asked about their stance on the abortion issue and it is a topic that can greatly affect their votes. It is hard to admit that one considers themselves to be part of the pro-choice movement when such negative words are often used to describe them. Not even dreaded politicians should have the feeling to succumb to neutrality on the issue because of harsh viewpoints from society.…

There are many ideologies within the political systems of today’s world. In order to present them in an organized manner, they have been arranged within a “political spectrum”. This allows the individual’s personal views to be plotted on a 20x20 grid, composed of two perpendicular number lines marked with values from -10 to +10, which references their respective ideology. This grid is very similar to the grid used in mathematics for plotting points and drawing functions. But instead of simply referencing values for “x” and “y”, however, one’s position on each axis reflects one’s position on different political issues.…

In a personal point of view, an individual would support abortion because of the reasoning of having the right to do whatever she wants with her body and abort it without any people, religious, or governmental interference. This idea is seen and a great support resource with the Declaration of independence, allowing an individual to hold “truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal [and] they are endowed by their Creator with certain in unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," (The Declaration of Independence; The Want, Will and Hopes of the People). Christian Individuals whom live in Texas may argue with the concept of abortion by saying that we were all blessed with the liberty of life by the Creator, as well as the focus of men. However, women have been given the right to vote for whomever she pleases, the rights to safe abortion, and the definition of happiness could vary depending on religious views.…

If society outlaws abortion, society is interfering with the woman’s right to make decisions related to her own body. Other times, it’s complicated.…

Some feel that abortion goes against their morals and religious beliefs. Others strongly believe that abortion is a woman’s right to decide. Personally, I believe it is a woman’s choice, because they know what is best for them. This debate between being for or against abortion has been going on since Roe won the Roe v. Wade case in 1973. As we have learned from history classes, Roe was a soon-to-be-mother who tried Texas’ laws because she wanted an abortion.…
